Most employers do including the military. It shows responsibility.

This is incorrect! Do not pay the debt, unless it's an accurate debt and you really do owe the money!! I made this mistake once. By paying the debt, you are basically admitting that the collection and debt is accurate AND they can still place it on your credit report. You're doing the right thing. Just fight it. They have to provide the burden of proof that the debt is valid and accurate. They will also have to provide this same proof to the credit reporting agencies when and if it's reported and you dispute the item. They're playing hard ball and they want to see who will flinch first. You could get a lawyer, but I HIGHLY doubt you'll need to take it that far.

Once you register the dispute, the company that reported it MUST provide documentation to you and to the reporting agencies that the debt is a) yours and b) legit.

If they fail to do so within 90 days, the item is removed from your report.

Good luck and stick with it.
MatthewAMEL has the right idea. This is "spot on" advice.

Financial responsibility shows to a persons decision making capabilities and responsibility. There is a reason they do it. There's a reason the military does it. There's also a reason why foreign countries seek out those with poor financial situations to bribe information from them.
