Why are people rude?
 

Flew with a guy last month who was one of the 300hr wonders now 1500 who always got mad at ATC. Off freq he would call them (Insert profantiy here) idiots etc...
He would make wrong calls to them and then call them the idiot. Heaven forbid if a controller wouldn't answer him on the first try.
I just don't get it. Here is a new pilot who won the lottery and got an airline job after only being a pilot for a year. And he is chuck yeager. He flew fine and i don't have any issues with that. It just that everybody is an idiot according to him, from rampers to gate agents to flight attendents etc... I would try to correct his lack of knowledge with explaination but he never wanted to hear it. I gave him a copy of important parts of the AIM and 10 min after departure it was in the garbage. :eek:
Just basic basic uncontrolled airport stuff. How to get a clearance, reporting points etc...He just didn't want to hear it.
Anyone know how to educate a brick wall?

It would be nice were it the old days and you could let a guy like that hang himself and look the fool. It's a fine line to walk these days though. Anymore, one person gets in trouble, its your ass too.

Well you know what they say...for a student to accept instruction, they must accept the instructor. Maybe it was either unwelcome or unnecessary. Maybe it was because he sensed the stuff you thought about him in the first part of your post there.

People are rude when they don't get their way or when things don't go their way, simply put.

You could be right, i have flown with people that intimidate. You will never get the best out of someone if you don't treat them with respect.
But in this case i really believe he thinks knows all there is to know and that he is so above everybody else that they just annoy him. I'm sure he is talking crap about me right now but I expect that. He talks crap about everybody.

I think this is more about young people never having to have a real job before. Parents paid for school, after school they land this job. And now for the first time in their lives they have to work and it's really intimidating. Rather than have an open mind, he decides to say how much better he is and critique everyone. Must be some kind of defence mechanism. But it sure as hell get annoying.

Sounds like you did your best to mentor him. When I was working on my PPL I made a crack about one of the controllers at Travis AFB. I said something to the effect of "That guy must be new'. My instructor said "Kinda like us huh?" That really put things in perspective.
Funny how something as simple as that could have such a long term impact on both my life and work.
In the future you could just mention that you don't want to listen to his negative diatribes. Life is short, if he can't learn something new every trip maybe he should be doing something else.:)

Flew with a guy known far and wide (within the company) as Captain G*D D*MN!T :D I thought he was hilarious. He knew his stuff though, so it was all good.

As for the guy mentioned by the OP, man, that is not the way to be a productive part of the two-man crew. The licenses we carry around are licenses to *learn* no matter how much experience we have. I am learning something new every single day. And that's how I like it.

I couldn't care less about who I fly with, actually the more odd the guy is the better for entertainment. But still, I can't imagine a Captain actually giving me the AIM to look over, at 1500 hours. That's pretty lame, are you seriously surprised that he threw it in the trash? A little simple thing like "look over the AIM, since you don't seem to know non standard stuff" would have hurt his pride a lot more than actually forcing it upon him. LOL If I was him I would have taken that AIM and taped it on the panel the rest of the trip for reference.
