Sorry to revive an old forum topic here but I was curious if any reserve guys/gals out there have thought of, or currently drive for companies like Lyft, Uber, or Sidecar in their spare time or while sitting on reserve?
These companies seem like a good option while waiting for "the call" as the work appears to keep you local and you can start and stop working when you decide. Thought? Comments?

Learn a skill like web development or database programming that can be done on your own schedule from anywhere. The challenge will be breaking into the industry without doing it as a full-time job but once you get established it meshes well with pilot lifestyle. Added benefit that you can ramp up quickly to full-time if you get laid off, medical issues, etc.

I'm on relay rides and people rent my truck daily. It more than pays for my insurance every month. Relay rides is different than side car though. With Relay Rides you don't drive the people they drive themselves. I see a lot of people doing Lyft though and I'm also a member in case someone has my truck and I need a ride. Either that or I use Zip car for $8/hr. Either way what really makes the difference, as far as receiving business, is the location that you are at. I'm on west coast and as you may or may not know, the west coast is filled with people who wall, bike, or hitch rides. East coast could depend on what city your in. Hope that helps.

I've said it before on this thread, and ill say it again... web design/iOS, Droid app development. I've been doing it for a few years now while sitting reserve. I make some money on the side making the apps but the biggest benefits come from the tax write-off. It's easy to learn too, you just need patience.

Although, not on reserve just unemployed until I can someday get an interview with a regional, I have been writing PLC programs on a laptop for various companies who use automation equipment. PLC=Programmed Logic Controllers. Definetly secure work since everything is going to repetitive automation, and it can be done and uploaded from anywhere.
