If given a choice, I would probably like the northeast because the flying seems more interesting at first glance. But since I will probably have to commute, Houston might be easier to get home from.
What do you guys think? Is there any choice?

Depends on your seniority. The oldest guy in our class is 30 and he chose his base. The youngest is 22 and he got the honor of being selected to fly out of the Bahamas Beach Resort that is Presque Isle, Maine. The next few classes are going to be for the Saab then the Q classes are rumored to start late spring into the summer. Also, it depends on if Saab FO's want to transition to the Dash. If they do then I'm sure we will see more Saab classes. If not then the Dash classes will be going on until they fill up the slots.

Thanks. Wow, the oldest guy is 30? I have that beat! How was the interview? I am almost ready to take the ATP written. I hear that if we take it, pass it, and bring our score, then we will not have to take a test there.

If given the option to choose - where would I likely spend the least time sitting around? :)

If you have the ATP written done then you still have to take the written at the interview and get an 80% on it to continue and yes it used to be you didn't have to take it. My interview at Colgan was the toughest one that I have had to date. I interviewed with PSA, Piedmont, and a few others but this one was the most challenging believe it or not. There was only one guy that has prior 121 experience that is in our class right now. They turned down the rest. The oldest gut is 30 but everyone here has from 2500 to 1000 hrs with the majority having around 2000.

Hey man. Don't be dissing on the "Isle". Its the best kept secret in the company. Spend a few months on reserve in IAD and you'll be dying to fly out of there.

I'm sure it's a lot more beautiful in Maine than in... Dulles... :D
If it wasn't a horrible commute, I wouldn't mind at all!

I filled out the latest interview at WillFlyForFood, so you might want to check that out as it's pretty comprehensive. I have my ATP and still had to take the written, so you'll have to take it anyway. It's really not that hard, but like others have said, you need an 80% or you're out. There were several people ejected from my interview group because of this, despite Chuck Colgan telling each of us days in advance that it would be a technical test that should be taken seriously. Also, there will be 121 questions on the test. Because of my background, I did the 135 ATP written. So there were a couple of things I was unsure of regarding specific 121 questions on the Colgan test.

I had one other 121 interview a couple of years ago at ASA (I was put into the hiring pool). At the time, ASA was supposed to be one of the toughest interviews (two day interview, written test, logic test, HR interviews, technical interview, and a level D sim eval). I'd say this Colgan interview was pretty equal in difficulty. The first day was pretty long and a little inefficient (we sat around and waited at various points throughout the day), but logistically there probably wasn't any way around that. They also warned us beforehand that it may be a little long, and to please be patient. Everybody from Colgan was very nice though, and from what I could tell those that didn't make the cut were treated with respect and dignity. The people in the group I was with seemed like a great bunch, and comprised mostly CFIs with about 1600 hrs. A later afternoon group had some furloughed airline guys as well as more CFIs.

One last thing... We were told (via email) that the first day we would just be taking the written test and filling out paper work, and to just dress business casual. So, 80% of us did just that... But then the plans changed after we arrived and they started doing HR interviews the first day. The Colgan staff was understanding as to why most of us didn't have suits, but still it was a little awkward at first, particularly for the guys that had to go first. Apparently they were asked why the weren't wearing suits and had to pull out the email. Anyway, regardless of what your email says, show up to both days wearing a suit!
