ALPA's accounting is a slow motion train wreck. The problem is not the people, they're great. It's a software program that was implemented that had known flaws in it and the staff was opposed to, but the General Manager wanted. So he got it. He and his #2 are about as worthless as they come, but you pay them a lot of dues money for the privledge of their presence.

In terms of an arrearage, you should be able to clear that easily. Make sure you get your membership chairman to get them to waive the reinstatement fees...they can.

As far as paying while not being a member, you are paying a contract maintenance fee. In other words, you are enjoying the benefits of a contract negotiated by the union. Everyone else has to pay for that, so should you...no one gets a free ride. That's the theory.

If you don't want to pay ALPA, you have the right to refuse. Then you have two options. If your contract allows, the union can demand your termination. Or, you and ALPA can agree to a third party charity that you would pay the money to. They can and will monitor it and can have you terminated if you BS the deal.
