Default PIC Piston Multi or SIC Turbine

The title basically says it all, but just looking for other people's opinions. Have an option of doing either PIC multi 135 flying, or SIC turbine 121. Who knows when there would be any PIC turbine coming at the 121, so my thought is that PIC multi piston now is better than PIC turbine who-knows-when.

I know that going to majors and all that require turbine PIC, but for a move OUTSIDE the 121 world, which would you think to be better?

Discuss.

Multi-piston PIC is valuable time....but there *is* value in multi-turbine SIC, despite what MANY long-term FOs at regionals may claim.

When I was hired into my current job, I was insurable as PIC on our Citation II with something like 2600 hours and roughly 75 hours in type but only because I already had 1300+ jet SIC, the vast majority of which was in the CRJ-200. That meant I didn't have an SOE limitation on my CE-500 type rating once I left SimCom, allowing me to legally be good-to-go once I had the temporary certificate in hand.

FWIW, there have been *lots* of pilots aspiring to enter the 91/135 ranks prior to the Great Recession who went 121 to quickly build time & experience before making the leap into bizav...

I would have to ask which route would get you turbine PIC the soonest.

With the new regs coming out. I would suggest getting Multi PIC time first at least 1000hrs then look more towards SIC turbine time. just my .02

Majors do not all require turbine PIC, but they all to my knowledge require 1000 hours of some sort of PIC.

Multi PIC is generally not a requirement, and piston ME PIC will not make meet major airline requirements without turbine time.

First off, do you have 1000 hours PIC (ASEL, AMEL, or a combo)? If not you need to get that FIRST before going to a regional where you might have a long upgrade time.

If you have 1000 hours PIC of some sort, then next on your list would be turbine time...PIC preferred, but SIC is better than no turbine time.

If it comes down to it, majors will hire a guy with a bunch of 121 SIC before they hire a 135 piston ME PIC.

Right now, I'd take a 2:1 trade of my caravan time for anything else.

Hell, maybe even 3.5:1.

Major airlines do not require ME TPIC, but that is for one reason and one reason only...

A few high-performance fighter aircraft and military trainers have only one engine, and they don't want to exclude those guys.

In reality, non-military SE TPIC will not do the trick in most cases (of course there have been exceptions, but I would wager they all had something else going for them).

I agree on whatever gets you Multi Turbine PIC as soon as possible. Probably staying out of 121 would accomplish that nowadays, but who knows.
