I'm not sure why you think it's unfair or unreasonable. Airlines look at it from a liability standpoint. You were a CFI (captain), you let the aircraft get into a compromising position. What if you were a captain and it had been a RJ/TP with a full load of people? If you weren't sure the PPL (FO) could land in the wind, why let them. IMHO, the airlines look at is as poor judgement. Not trying to be a jerk.
As for the unfair or unreasonable comment, I was talking about the applicant's perspective. I don't think it's unfair or unreasonable for an airline to set it's own standards for employment. If they want exclude this person or that person, that's their choice and their right.
As for my mishap, I wasn't acting as a CFI. I was just along for the ride. It's a distinction without a difference though so I'm making no excuses.

can't really find anything in the regs requiring that the check instructor document in the "remarks" section of the student's logbook that it was a failed evaluation of their piloting skills.
as far as the required FAA documentation (logbook), there's possibly no way that a "half-way clued interviewer" would be able to distiguish between a stage check that was "converted" to a lesson versus one that was "incomplete" due to wx, atc delay, etc.
i'm not singing the graces of the system, but the FAA only really cares about EOCs or FAA pilot evaluations (ie checkrides)

I was hired by a regional in 06 when things were kicking..... I had two busts that were part 61. I explained in my interview what I did wrong and what I learned from them, blah, blah, blah.
Someone said it earlier: APPLY when you can, sell the sh#t out of yourself in the interview.
On a side note, what I really learned from my two busts is that DPEs make a crapload of money, and a bust perpetuates that. Both of my "re-checks" were less that 0.3 on the Hobbs, and one of them was done in the traffic pattern. Busts are very subjective.
