Delta sort of needs the feed. Can't really compare ASA to Mesa. Correct me if I'm wrong but Mesa really didn't have much lift for Delta. ASA is the biggest DCI carrier for Delta and I have a feeling they know it. Sure they will cut some flying here and there but I don't thing you will see the two in court any time soon. Sort of a symbiotic but toxic relationship if you know what I mean.
I think your head is in the sand. Take a look at Comair. They were in the same position you are describing not so many years ago.
