The Kindle is approved per the GOM, but must be purchased by the crew member. The company is going to either switch to buying the Kindle for all crew shortly, or go ahead and try and get the iPad approved by the FAA. They're awesome for actually reading books, it looks like paper and the battery lasts a lifetime... now they won't use apps or display fancy color pictures, but I don't need that for my FOM/AFM anyway. I'm not sure which FAR you are referring too in regards to pilots and approved devices.

Also, the kindle is about worthless as for accessing information in a timely manner. I use it for space saving, however I also have a few quick reference pages from commonly used GOM chapters. (HOT and various procedures etc...)
