IND or MEM base....the good the bad,the ugly?

the good...
1. Cost of living (houses, gas prices, taxes etc) can't be beat.
2. BBQ (but that gets old too)
3. Decent park system, just gotta know which ones to go to without your .45
the bad...
1. crime, crime, crime unless you are way east (collierville/fayette county) or south (MS).
I'd stay away from Cordova....Memphis annexed it and taxes rose, it is next to impossible to SELL a house there, but that means you can get a stellar deal on buying a house there. If you never wanna sell it....
I moved to Fayette CO (35 minute drive to airport) from Germantown and have no regrets......twice the house for the same taxes and zero crime.

Avon, Brownsburg, Mooresville (if you can handle the "necks"), some of Plainfield, downtown Indy, Greenwood.
If you want the best three in 20-30 minutes I would say Avon, Brownsburg / Pittsboro and the west side of Plainfield.

Lived in MEM for a little more than a year and I thoroughly miss it. Definitely have to move there with an open mind. Great culture...music, food, nightlife, it's all there. And of course affordable living. Plus no TN state income tax...
If you are single and in your 20-30s, I'd highly recommend living in either Midtown or Downtown. Yeah, sure there's crime, but I'd say none more than in any other major metropolitan city if you aren't careful or stupid.

I felt safer walking downtown Boston at 2 am by myself than walking many places in MEM at 5 pm with a group of people. Doesn't matter how careful or smart you are when the Gangsta Disciples or Crips decide it's time for some initiation style points...

Memphis is more dangerous (I've been mugged at gunpoint as well), but has an infinitely richer culture than IND. I'm a downtown/midtown person and single, so Memphis works well with me. Also, we have recently ended the despotic regime of W.W. and I've noticed eons of improvement as a result.
Downtown is pretty safe I'd say, due to the high police presence. South Main is a great neighborhood that I feel quite safe in. Midtown however, I think is much more shady since it sits next to the peripheries and lacks the numerous police downtown.
To reiterate what everyone else has said though, it seems it would be contingent on if you're married/single/like the suburbs/like more quirky neighborhoods.
Also, being far far away from home right now, I can say I don't go a day without thinking about Memphis BBQ.

If you are going to commute to a hub, MEM is a tough one. While the upside is Fedex 6 days a week, the downside is expensive hotels near the airport. A crashpad will likely require a car. If you are going to live in base though MEM isn't so bad. Just keep your head down, make sure your A/C works, and start a gym membership when you get there because the BBQ gets you after a while!

Hey guys,
Just wondering if I could get some insight on choosing a base of either IND or MEM, from people who have lived there. What are cities like for travel, leasure,QQL, $ ect.... From what Ive read IND and MEM are pretty comparable as far as cost of living, and IND is safer to live in (I know I was shocked too
).Well at any rate, any input on the good, the bad or the ugly would be appreciated. Thanks

If you've never spent much time in IND, you might not know this but it has a very similar section of town called Broad Ripple that is very much like Midtown. It is HUGE with the arts and culture. I liked Midtown in Memphis but Broad Ripple is a mix of Midtown and Beal rolled into one.
