I lived in Hoboken for many years and loved it. It is doable on regional FO pay but it is a stretch. You need to find roomates and craigslist is good for that. Living w strangers can be odd, but the rents dictate it.
The biggest hassle there is parking. If you get back late at nt it is a struggle 2 find a spot in most of the town. U have 2 be aware of that when looking 4 a place there. On the bright side it is a great party spot (NYC nxt door) and only 15 mins 2 EWR.
U can find good places in Jersey City and Union City for cheaper but yes the neighborhoods r cr@ppier. They are not that bad despite what many think. You are still close to EWR and Manhattan.
Keep in mind that Eastern PA is a drive and w gas/tolls/traffic it can be aggravating. If u had wife/kids I would say live there. As a single guy look in Hudson county.

Look in Weehawken. I when I was based out of TEB, it was great. I didn't even own a car, just took the bus everywhere, and it's only 10 mins from Times Square. The rent for a one bedroom ranges from $600-800 a month, and if you get roommates, it's about maybe $500 or so. I believe it's about a 20 minute drive to EWR. It's walking distance to Hoboken, and it's North Jersey's best kept secret.

$.75 to cross the Delware
Gas depends on your car. I use a '99 Corolla. Gas is cheaper than rent!
Traffic? I'm from CA, so the traffic here is nice.

On the edge of your two hour window, try South Jersey, on the shore. Figure south of Toms River (exit 82 on NJ Parkway) within 15 miles to make your limit. Stay west of the highway for best prices and near an exit for fastest times to EWR. You'd be close to the shore and its attractions. Drive north is usually without problems except when traffic is heading home on Sunday during the beach season. Don't know prices but this is the way a lot of people looking to get more bang for the buck go who work up north, and if you like boating/the beach, it is the only affordable way. Just don't expect a beach house next to Snooky, out of your price range!

Allentown, PA is a great place to look. The cost of living is much lower then NJ. You can get a pretty sweet deal for $1000 or less per month WITH your utilities included. PM me if you need some suggestions.
