I have to imagine that's a reality that a lot of people face... back when "Majors" paid more in their 2nd year, they made at captains, it was feasible... but today it's a a long road back to wage parity between 10 year RJ captains and 2 FO's at majors..

Maybe at united and us airways. Yes, 1st year pay is a paycut for regional captains but 2nd year fo pay at American and delta on the md80 is the equivalent to 9 and 10 year rj cap pay at skywest. By year 3 pay (after your 2 year anniversary) the pay is equivalent to 15 and 17 year rj cap pay with better benefits ( travel and health) not to mention an A fund retirement or 12% b fund compared to a max of 6% 401k match at skywest.

With all that said qol will probably be worse unless you happen to live in NYC or Mia or dtw. And the fact that you will be back on reserve for a while.

but can you imagine the stiff competition for that job when they begin to hire off the street? you'd better have some resume to break into that gig... and I imagine RJ captains will be a dime a dozen by then..

I hear you, that is why I decided to look beyond borders to increase my income before I get out of this paid hobby we call a "career" although I understand that my option isn't for everybody but It worked for me, at 47 the whole legacy job boat sailed for me.

I wonder what the average age of the guy who "missed the boat" is now a days? Figure there hasn't been any real hiring in almost 12 years... and the average new hire in 1999-2000 would have been 30-35 years old.. so that's 42-47... or about your age..
