Our internal emails state that it is a requirement but I'm not sure how strict they're being. If I were you I wouldn't handicap myself, get it!

Yes, same as any other airline. It's something you need when you upgrade and unlike say a college degree it doesn't take a lot of time or momey to do it so there's no real excuse for a 121 applicant to not have one. You also might learn a little about 121 regs in the process.

This may be one reason I cant seem to get an interview with SKW, as I dont have my ATP written out of the way yet. But it doesnt seem to be a big deal at other regionals, as I have gotten interviews there without an ATP written.

Thy are $150/test now for written exams. I am on unemployment with $0 in the bank and a family to feed. It is harder than you think.

I am sorry to hear that. If that helps, ATP school charges for writtens $129 if you book it on the phone, to save at least few bucks. Also this was a year ago...good luck.

If that's the case, than I would recommend NOT going to a regional airline. I am single, no kids, and have no debt. I also came into my first year here at SkyWest with about $10k in savings. I pay about $500/mo for rent, and try to live as frugally as possible. With all of that, it looks like I will be able to make it through this first year without going into debt (which I will NOT do, I'd quit and do something else before that happens). If you have no savings and a family, you really need to think about doing something else, or you are going to be ABSOLUTELY miserable and probably financially ruined at the end of your first year.

Before I even interviewed here, I built an Excel spreadsheet with all of my monthly expenses, and planned on min guarantee for reserve at first year pay. I did this even though everybody told me I'd probably have a line pretty quick, because you NEVER know what this industry will do.

Fortunately I am making more money here than I planned on, and got a composite line a few weeks after IOE. But I sure wouldn't count on that, because if you do get stuck on reserve in some base you don't want to move to, your expenses will not work out well for you.

Unfortunately wrxpilot is right...you probably can't afford a regional job if can't afford an FAA written test unless you get really lucky and get hired into your hometown. You're either going to have commuting expenses or moving expenses...

Just out of curiosity, whats the odds of getting a LAX, SBA, or SFO base on the CRJ?
