I've even done the "I dont want to rest in the crewroom for my 0630 comute home" and took the 11pm 2 leg FedEx home. Once home I realized that I got home only 10 minutes earlier than if I would have rested and took the 0630 flight. Now I am a zombie from the flying all night to get back home, all the while not wanting to rest in an empty crew room. Stupid me...

Lots of good opinions on this one. I've been swayed by good arguments. My initial reaction in hearing Sully talk led to me feel accosted as a previous regional pilot. I've heard time and time again mainline pilots bash regionals and the crews for taking low paying jobs, and taking their flying from them etc (and yes, I have personally heard these statements from mainline pilots while in their jumpseats.)
So hearing Sully speak against regionals I couldn't help but feel the same way once again. Reexamining his argument, it makes more sense. Like I have been saying all along, I loathe the regional airline model. I hope Sully is aiming at breaking that and returning flying to mainline carriers, even if that means mainline pilots flying 70 seat jets.

What is really incredible is that after watching the video (and the intro of Sully and the banner below his one-shot), it appears that Sully has acquired a job at CBS News as their "Aviation and Safety Expert". Expect to see him appear after any news breaking aviation accident from here on out.
I'd rather he got the job from Fox News to get rid of that GA guy who thinks with his PPL experience he can speculate an all things airline (no offense to the GA crowd).

What's with all the "Raa Raa Regional Pride!" going on?
Capt. Sully is trying to shine a light and bring pressure to bear on the regional industry to improve it's safety level. Are there variations between regional companies? Sure. So you might work at Airline Awesome. Good for you. I hope that the model at Airline Awesome gets copied at the other regionals, because you shouldn't want there to be variation. You should expect and even demand that your deadhead on another regional airline will be as safe as Airline Awesome. Variation in levels of safety is not awesome. Some of us work with such levels of dysfunctionality that it will boggle your little Regional Airline Pride head.
I, for one, welcome his comments. There is only so much air crews can do when everything is continuously stacked on their shoulders to take care of.

Huh? In addition to AMR 587 that I assume you are referring to, CAL went off the side at DEN, AMR went off the end in Jamaica, and SWA went off the end at MDW in that time frame.
The first two were hull losses and the last one killed a kid. I'd call each of those "major."

Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I can't help but wonder where the whole conversation on this thing would be if, instead of an Airbus 320, it had been a Chautauqua E145 or AWAC CRJ-200 flown by a 30 year old CA and 24 year old FO, that hit geese on takeoff from LGA and safely ditched in the Hudson River...
