I think we are underpaid and maybe you work for some awful outfit but I just get bent when guys say they make less than the guy at McDonalds.
Maybe but I'm guessing that guy doesn't have $100-$250k in loans to pay off for a college degree and flight education to pay off. He/she probably didn't have to put in years of work and cash outlays just to GET to their food court position.

Everyone thinks that they deserve more and in many cases they are correct.
It still doesn't mean that people entering the profession should be expecting all of the things on the list that one is suppose to be jealous of the McD's worker if they planned on being a pilot - especially an airline pilot.
That seems like pure poor planning and unrealisitc expectations of the career field.

Nope - the McD's worker doesn't have large school loans to pay off (at least for training in fast food prep). Does that make him smarter than they guy who laid down so much cash and investment in time for a job that has well known drawbacks?

First of all, I am comfortable where I am with current compensation. You never heard ME complain about my salary or MY QOL. I never said that the younger FO's EXPECTED those 'things' I listed. I simply stated that since they do without those little luxuries you would THINK that this job might be worth a little more than THEY are compensated for. THEY BECOME THE CAPTAIN in the case of an extreme emergency, remember that.

That's for sure... Part of the reason I changed careers to aviation was because I didn't like being home every night, doing the same thing everyday. I do understand that some people like that kind of life, but I do NOT understand those that want that kind of life and work in aviation (while *****ing about it).

Just bid morning standby forever and live near your base airport. I know at my company they dont fly multi day trips very often. Its a 9-5 you can sleep at.....well more like 6-2.

It's often who you know or being lucky and in the right place at the right time. A school mate of mine was neighbors with M.B. who was the HR gal at NWA in charge of pilot hiring. He got on very young with no PIC, did he "earn" it? If you are more than qualified and get on I'd say you "earned" it. How many 300 hour FO's did you fly with back in 2007 who "earned" their job? I believe that your "earned" analogy is a little out of whack. I don't think a single flow up that I know feels any guilt over it as everyone who flowed was well beyond qualified and deserving of the job.

So... in so many words, you didn't earn it. No wonder your outlook is so positive! You're just lucky to be there.

No I didn't. I thought we were talking about yeah sure's comment from post #6. I have no comment about the possiblity of becoming the CA in an extreme emergency. I would suppose with two people in the cockpit - that would be expected. So far it seems that the case has proven to be true thank goodness!

How can someone knowingly take out a substantial student loan, finish training, instruct, get hired by a regional and THEN complain about how bad it is and how others (McDonalds) workers don't have loans or stresses like they do?

Did anyone put a gun to your head, forcing you into this career and the loans as well? Probably not.

Is this career rough at times? Sometimes crap? Of course it is...but let's not wax poetic about the simple joys and freedoms of airport McDonalds workers, all the while with the "poor me and my career sacrifices."

Everyone goes through tough years in the airlines, we all signed on the dotted line for this career and we ALL can choose to leave for greener pastures at any time...I hear McDonalds in Terminal C is hiring.
