I don't think this thread is just about cheap/broke pilots not wanting to eat out. What about when you're hungry enroute? It's nice to have a healthy snack so you aren't starving and end up gorging on food during the first small break you get leaving you with nothing but a stomach ache and guilt. Also, what about when you're on an overnight that's too short to go out or there's nothing near by or when you leave too early to catch breakfast at the hotel. For some pilots, that is the reality--it's not a money thing. It's more of a convenience to have food with you in a lunch bag in case you get hungry throughout the day. If I don't carry food with me, I have the eating habits of a stray animal--I eat whenever I can, whatever I can and as much as I can because I don't know when my next meal will be. Keep the food ideas coming!

I also like to pack string cheese and single serving Greek yogurts. I like the Oikos key lime pie flavor. It's like key lime pie but without the guilt. Also, I'll make a salad but keep balsamic vinegar/olive oil dressing in a food safe screw on cap container I got at the container store. It hasn't leaked yet.

I've been a Vegetarian (pescatarian) for almost 2 years now, and recently am trying to go vegan. This is another reason why I bring my own food with me. It's a tough balancing act while on the road. I'm slowly working my way into it.
You can get tofu burritos at a lot of burrito places in airports. Not sure how that will work out with the vegan part but works out great for the veggy part. I am slowly working to make a move off most meats as well. |

They sure stink to me when the guy on the other side of the flight deck is digging into that bag with his fork!
I always ask if it bothers them first, its a good rule. |
There are few things worse than getting on a 4-day with someone that has really foo-foo eating habits. Their stupid cooler takes up the entire cockpit in the RJ and you're guaranteed to hear all about how their way of eating is so far superior and how awful normal food is.
And rickt- they are just being nice. It stanks up the cockpit. |

I honestly can't see why anyone has any issue with pilots bringing their own food along for their trips.
I do it because 1) it saves a LOT of money. And 2) because sometimes you flat out don't have time to go searching around a terminal for food that won't give you the runs and isn't too pricey. I'll always go out for drinks with my crew and always buy at least the first round. But if anyone has an issue with me bringing my own food with me then that's their problem. Also, I put my lunch bag behind my seat so it's not in the way of coming in or out of the flight deck. That being said I also know plenty of guys that fly for the big guys (CAL, UAL, SWA, FDX, USA, etc) that bring their own food and make plenty of bank. If the negative Nancy's on here want to keep spending twice as much (at least) money, and probably twice as much time on food at the airports you fly to so be it. But why judge those that choose to bring their own sustenance? |

I fly with ultra marathon guys as well, and they don't look like they are going on an extended camping trip like a lot of the regional guys do. There are many other things in airports other than McD's, Dunkin Donuts, and Starbucks.
In fact, I haven't been to any of those three places in years. |
