If you anticipate having a pay cut in your future in order to make a drastic step forward you should plan accordingly. In any case, how is having less debt make your life go backwards? How do you think that Capt paycheck will feel with no debt payments and money in the bank? And who is to say that your regional is going to be around 5-10 years down the road. Why don't you ask some Comair guys how that's working for them?
In short, if you want to be a regional lifer, more power to you. But if you can't make the big leap because you've got the proverbial golden handcuffs? Don't come crying on here about it. Enjoy your big mortgage, high car payments and credit card balances, and your E175.

No, the lifers have been here a decade or more. And there are quite a few of them, mostly in FLL and TPA. The ones here less than 2 years are the street CAs and a few FOs who managed to move up quickly, right place, right time. The lifers are making it so that you pretty much HAVE to move to a northern base in the IAD, ATL or CLE system if you want to hold the left seat anymore. After a year or two in those small podunk town bases, you'll be ready to jump ship ASAP. Thanks to the company dragging its feet with Saab upgrades, there a quite a few of us in the right seat senior enough to upgrade who are chomping at the bit for the opportunity to accumulate TPIC time. We still have the drive to move onward and upwards in our careers. Silver is definitely NOT the place I want to retire from.

Not all paid to play so please get your facts straight. A lot of the senior guys from the GIA days have ok lines and love being home every day, so more power to them, plus that's less competition for me and those who do want to move to a major. So please don't bring pft into this thread.
I've heard so many captains say that they can't afford 1st year pay at a major, but those same captains are the ones not saving money, or planning accordingly.

I thought I was going to upgrade a lot sooner, but hasn't happened. I'll give it to the end of the training contract I signed (December) then try to leave if there's nothing in sight as far as upgrades. But yeah, 3m is NOT the place to retire from.

At TSA I'd say the top 25% are definitely going to stay... the guys at 25%-40% most of them will stay... and guys at 40%-50% will probably be half stay half go and bottom 50% will pretty much all go.
Just like everyone else life didn't stop for everyone like the job movement did so now these guys have gotten what I call "life'd" into a spot. Now they have more kids, ex wives, kids in college, etc. They can't take the pay cut even for one year. Or they don't want to take the days off per month cut.
With the growth at TSA right now the capt list is starting to become more junior so these percentages will shrink to were most will end up leaving.
