Default Training Departments

I hope this doesn't throw a wrench into all of the complaining. If you look at Regionals as a stepping stone to advance your career or not, who has the best training dept. where the priority is to make you a better pilot not just train you to to meet the mins and get you online?

Eh, I don't think that's the training department's job. The training department exists to take qualified pilots and turn them into line pilots, then to make sure those line pilots keep to standards while performing your job.

In short, you're going to learn far more on the line than you will in the schoolhouse.

SkyWest...they invest a lot of time/money/statistics into that department. People who come from other regionals and those who have moved onto the majors say the same

Only you can make yourself a better pilot, it can be the world's best or world's worst training dept, it's how you apply yourself for the most part. Very hard to "make you a better pilot" in 16-20 hours of sim time.

That's complete BS. There has been huge differences in training departments. Look at Colgan air for example and the stall training that came after that crash. Many airlines were already doing the stall training that way already. I agree that you learn a ton on line, but you need to become proficient in many emergency procedures before you get on line. Because when the $hit hits the fan.....

I think you misinterpreted what he was saying. You can be proficient and competent in emergency procedures, but that doesn't make you a better pilot. It lets you pass the checkride. Any monkey can read a QRH and push the button. And I think your stall training info is incorrect....the Fed's didn't change their method of stall recovery checking(hold altitute and power out) until AFTER the colgan crash, and that's how all airlines trained/checked on stalls. They assumed you knew in real life to lower the AOA. But like you said, its when the poop hits the fan when you find out if you have become a better pilot.

They help you become a good line pilot.
