Not sure I'd hire you. Taking out a loan you can't pay back speaks volumes about your character whether you like it or not. A job at McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, or whatever on the side would have more than covered the extra 200 bucks. Man up, pay your loan back, and demonstrate you're worthy of job.

Only took a few posts before someone claimed I traded sexual favors for cash. Classy. As for ATA, I can assure you my loan was NOT forgiven. The first couple classes (they had 2 a month) were forgiven. I sure as heck was not, I was almost done with my Pvt. My parents had cosigned my loan, so Bankruptcy was not an option. I promise you I paid off the bad loan to Key, but our little group (Red Trainers) was a big part of revamping the way flight schools are financed. I was an idiot to put the money down upfront; but that's the school of hard knocks, eh?

Anyone saying that "not paying back a loan speaks volumes about your charecter" is very blind in today's world. Especially when we are talking about regional pilots. No $h1t, we know what we are signing... That "extra job at Burger King?" Oh like the extra job the FO was working prior to the 3407 Bufalo crash... Yeah, the same one that sparked the fight for the 1500 hour rule. How can you judge someone's charecter based off of this when you do not even know them? If anything, someone that works their a$$ off flying and fighting to pay back a student loan, while making only $24k a year (and knowing they could make more at a local job) is definitely worth taking a look at. It shows your commitment and passion for flying. Either way you look at it, your credit report does not determine your charecter, but rather the way you judge people you don't even know.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have crappy credit because of that same reason. And if there are hatters out there, then so be it. Life happens. What can I say, our government has taught us well. I can tell you though that in some states it is illegal to pull credit reports now. This is because of the crappy economy brought to you by corporations and government outsourcing jobs. California is one of those states.
P!$$ poor planning isn't. |
Amen JSH.
Folks were livin' high on the hog when I was at ATA. They took out 100K, rented sweet apartments, hit up the bars and clubs. Seems folks my age don't want to do without. I was essentially homeless after ATA folded, I also wasn't terribly smart money wise (stupid ='s putting all my money down at the beginning of training), but I learned quick! I lived in friend's Hangars, slept on a cot, had a camp stove and 2 totes with all my belongings. I worked 2 jobs, saved every penny, drove a Geo and lived about as frugally as you can. I wasn't unhappy, I had a blast those years. I just can not understand the fiscal irresponsibility of folks now a days. I wasn't taught how to be frugal or smart when I was younger, but I educated myself ASAP when I hit the real world. |

So you took out a loan you knew you weren't going to be able to pay off? Or you just aren't responsible enough to pay your loan off? Either way it is a reflection of your character. There are lots of ways to get your ratings without going insolvent, if one isn't creative enough to figure it out then they probably shouldn't be flying airliners around. I'm sure many of the HR departments of the major airlines feel the same way, go read the old gouges on the Delta interviews, they were hammering candidates on how they paid for their ratings. The real airlines want responsible members of society serving their customers, not deadbeats.
