When I can hold capatin within 200 miles of home I'd like to get a cub or 152 to commute to work. Probably an IFR 152. I might even buy an experiemental, but no time to build one now.

Speaking of J-3 Cubs...I am flying home to visit my family in NH and will be flying a J-3 I rent out of Hampton airfield (7b3) and flying between there and my inlaws house at Windsock village (NH69) Both are grass strips of varrying length....I look forward to it every year. It is specifically why one of the first things I did after my private was to get my tailwheel...I may not be able to own it but it is still nice to rent....maybe someday...speaking of own...if any of you are fealing like you have a few million to spare the airfield is for sale at http://www.hamptonairfield.com/add.htm

The J-3 was the one I was looking at. the others were lame jokes. As much as I want to fly them who knows if I'll ever be able to. The Stearman, yeah, the DC-3, Yeah, The other two.......someone will have to pinch me.
SAAB,
I totally am with you on the little grass strip out back of the barn. My kid's gonna learn how to fly from there someday. And you can land those planes almost anywhere. Put some big tundra tires on it and the bigger engine and man that will be fun. Go visit some friends and land in thier driveway. he he. Oh wait i'm in michigan not Alaska. That might not go over well.
Peace

I agree, my Pops and I bought a '47 Stinson 108-2 several years ago, so I could build some time and my brother could get his private. Wouldn't trade it for any thing. Full fuel (3 hours with an hour res) and 780 pounds., a true four place airplane. They are way under the radar and a nice one could be had for under 30 grand still.

There's a guy at my home airport that has a collection. He used to have:
P51d Mustang (Hurry Home Honey)
FG1 Corsair
P47 Thunderbolt (Tar Heel Hal)
Stearman
T28 Trojan
Marchetti SF260
Lear, Baron, Bonanza.
I'd hate to have his insurance bill

Ok I know several airline pilots that own thier own plane. I'm just wondering what kinda other equipment people have out there.
I have my own list of planes I want to fly or own someday. Let's see if I can manage any of these.
DC-3
P-51
Corsair
Stearman
Any of these possible first year?
Maybe I'll have to stick with the Piper Cub that is later on in the list.

Costs? Least costly is the Stearman but you are still going to push $100k for a decent one. Next would be the DC-3 but plan on burning up your credit card with fuel costs. Av gas... $4/gal and burn easily 30gal/hr/eng.
Still wanna dream? A mil and more easy for a decent P-51 and more for a rare Corsair. Cheaper machine may be a Hawker Sea Fury or buy a jet.. Hawker Hunter, L39, Fouga Magister... jets can be had for less than $300k easy.
I went for something interesting and MUCH cheaper.. an 1946 Swift.

My father and I went in on a Grumman Tiger for about seven years. Let me tell you the cost of owning a plane is unreal. The yearly maintenance averaged about $4K, the gas.....I put 750 hours on it, lets not figure up that one....the insurance was about 1.5K a year and the hangar we kept it in was 150 a month. Lots of cash...... That old saying applies, "If it floats, ******s, or flies... it's better to rent"
Ideally I want to own an extra 300. These damn airliners are boring. I need some good upside down time in my own personal fighter. Second on my list is a big ass steerman with >=400 horse engine. Something tells me this will be about twenty years away, unfortunately
