Do You Drink the Coffee?
#21
I think that I've posted this story on one of the old threads here before. At the end of the day when the cleaners took the hot water tanks off for "cleaning", they popped the top and a medium sized frog was floating in the top and he/she wasn't moving. I was relatively new at the time, and when I closely inspected the cleanliness of the inside of the container, in addition to the boiled frog, I never, ever, and never again used the hot water. If you're a real coffee connoisseur as I am, I started carrying a thermos bottle and generally, when I made it to a food court or restaurant, the vendors were very nice about refilling it, but some balked when I asked them to make sure it was a perfect 200 degrees, factoring in of course the cooling and by that time, it was the perfect 180 degrees. After that incident, at that base, the hot water was known as "frogwater."

All these anecdotes about foreign stuff in the water would apply to your municipal water supply too...you just don't get to see what's down there. Dilution is the solution...you don't need pure water, you just need for the concentration of bad stuff (ie decomposing frog) to be low enough not to hurt you. Problem with airplane tanks is that they're small, so anything that gets in there will have a high concentration.
I avoid drinking it, but if I need coffee, oh well. The water probably isn't as bad for your health as a diet soda.

Our aircraft have had the potable water system MEL'd for failure of a coliform bacteria test. There is definitely some stuff growing in the water systems in these tanks.
With that said, the water is so insanely hot when I make tea out of it, I'm not afraid to take my chances.
