If the over 60's become FE till 65, then why would that hurt hiring or upgrades?

Both news stories are speculation. If it happens tomorrow, it's still a minimum 18 months from reality. The actual announcement, in my guesstimation, will be a call for more study from the board with an expected completion date sometime in the future.

Age 60 will take time

please read

It will explain that the new rule will apply to 60th birthdays after implementation.

Premature anxiety? Don't worry,,,at least about me. I've taken to those first class seats. Your biggest obstacle now is the 60+ flight engineer who wants his window seat back... immediately. I went at 59 and would done so at 57, had it not been for the early-out penalties. Now, if you had planned on retiring at 60, will you be hit with huge EO deducations (FDX)? Crew scheduling will also have the over/under 60 senario to deal with. Good on them. :D :D :D

Marion Blakey, head of the Federal Aviation Administration, will discuss "Aviation Safety In A Changing World" at a National Press Club luncheon on Tuesday, January 30.

Blakey's speech will discuss how the landscape of aviation is changing rapidly. She will describe the steps the FAA is taking to keep pace with the industry and provide a return on the taxpayer's investment while doing so.
The National Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 30. Blakey's remarks will begin just after 1:00 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session.

To be the FAA Administrator you should be REQUIRED to have your ATP. Not just some law degree and a connection with the President.

Anyone else agree?

Compared to some previous FAA types, Blakely isn't too bad.

guys if it increases to 65 then it increases for everyone. there is no set back in when you upgrade, lets say you are 40 now and you were going to upgrade today. you would have been a captain for 20 years to age 60.

ok now you have to wait 5 years for someone to retire. so you upgrade at 45 and retire 20 years later at 65. you will still be a captain for 20 years. no difference. so if all you are worried about is upgrade times and crap like that then just do the math. now, as far as it being a good idea or not,, that is an entirely different issue.

Airsupport, I see your point, but not all of us want to work until 65 to retire... I'd rather take the upgrade and larger paycheck now then work an extra 5 years.
