yeah,, thats why i said" whether its right or not is the big question". i was just responding to people who were complaining that this is bad news for anyone wanting to upgrade and move on. i think that will be the least of our worrys

My guess is that about half will want, or need, to work past 60, and will be able to pass the medical. So approximately 2.5 year net slowdown.

It is likely that legislation will prevent those who have already retired from returning to their old seniority.

It is also reasonably likely that there will be a phase-in...ie raise the age by one year each year, over a five year period, or something like that.

Worst case...the music is about to stop! Do you have your chair? A nice comfy one that you'll be happy with for the next five years? Sucks to be at mesa right now

That is the whole point!!!
I have no desire to be flying anything after age 60.
We don't want to work longer for the same amount of pay!!!

Things may slow down but they won't come to a screeching halt. So instead of running off to a legacy at 1500 TurbPIC now you'll have to have 3-4000. Once you get there instead of upgrading in 6-8 years now it will be 8-12. The bottom line is that a fraction will chose to work past 60 and be able to. I just don't think (in my opinion) that it will have that much effect, some but not as much as most are saying.

Yeah, kinda like in the mid-late 90's, or even 2 years ago.

I suspect the vast majority of pilots at Delta, United and USAirways (East) will try to work the full 5 additional years. With their pensions having been turned over to the PBGC it would be an enormous boost to their retirment. The PBGC imposes IIRC about a $15,000/yr penalty in payments for those retiring at 60 vs. 65. In addition they will make, hence avoiding spending, an additional $600-700k over that 5 year period while their employers contribute another $60-70K to their B Funds, they will get additional return on their invested retirement funds for the 5 years, and finally they will not have to worry about having health coverage from 60-65 and/or all of the associated expenses of funding their own.

This will have a very negative short-to-mid-term financial and mental impact on everyone except those near the top of their respective seniority lists.
