The obstacles are:

1) Low time. Since they come to mesa with 200-300 hours, it takes a while (maybe a year or more on reserve) to reach 1000 hours.

2) Training Contract: Mesa makes you sign a 1 year/ $10K training contract...if you leave early you might have to pay.


Since many regionals are hiring very low-time pilots and the training contract enforceability is legally questionable (and there are ways to make it even more questionable) I suspect that some MAPD grads are getting out in less than one year.


But you would probably save time and money just getting your cfi and teaching for a few months. MAPD is 2 years and a LOT of money...in 2 years and for half the money you could be at SKW. The MAPD person would need two years at MAPD plus at least a year at mesa to get 1000 hours.

I am not a PACE grad. so I'm not defending it as a customer.

The fact is, PACE grads. are better trained and far more likely to pass ground and sim. training than much higher time CFIs coming in off the street. Safety isn't a concern, if you want to be safer you should insist all FOs go through the PACE program.

Oh there's a raft of OTHER concerns, but safety and competency ain't one of them.

But PACE is not 2 years and a lot of money - it's about 90 days and slightly less money than a lot.

If airlines are going to start to lower the mins to 250, I think they'll start to form their own programs like Mesa has. It's not cheap for the company to have repeated failures in ground. At least with programs such as these they'll have some assurance and best part is that the applicant will pay for it.
