It's all gonna depend on what you mean by these background issues. Misdemeanors or a felony could be a big difference. Regionals are desperate but they're not gonna a hire someone with jail time for drug trafficking on their record. Guys are still being taken out of training for trivial things on their records. Saw it first hand with the class ahead of mine.

I would think drug trafficking, if done in an airplane would be a valuable resume builder. Difficult flying, probaly less than advanced aircraft,. Challenging airfields, usually unimproved, shows ambition. I'd take a guy flying coke in a Aztec over a CFI with 1500 hours doing touch and goes any day

From my understanding, the largest issue that pilots encounter with their backgrounds is not putting it all on the table up front. If it's going to keep you from getting hired, it will for sure get you gone when discovered later. Put it all out there and make sure there's no surprises for the company later down the road. Airlines hire people with a wide variety of background issues. If it seems "minor", let them make that decision.

What kind of checkered past does your "friend" have?

Ha I'm at Jetblue. I have no desire to work for American. My friend has had a little mishap with faa a few years ago with a 135 carrier. Just going to be honest with them about it in the interview, I'm trying to get him into the 121 world instead of what he was doing. Thanks for the advice. Psa would be nice for the bases (lives close to cvg) but sounding like envoy might be quicker option for flow (he is older so might be a little better).

I believe Piedmont would be his quickest flow time. Envoy and PSA I believe will end up being a bit of a "wash" for anyone hired today. And to be honest, while having a flow in the back pocket is certainly nice, for a new hire today, it shouldn't really be the determining factor for choosing a regional. If I personally were choosing a regional to work for today, I would be looking at:

PSA, Piedmont, or Envoy based on whichever one had a base I lived in or could commute to easily, Endeavor, or SkyWest if I wanted a west coast base. Maybe CommutAir if United is your goal, but that isn't exactly a sure shot either.

What is the difference between a pre-offer and conditional offer? Do you fill out the pria paperwork during the interview and do they request 141 records. Just curious why so many get weeded out AFTER the interview. And how many pilots out there have some kind of legit criminal record?!

Pre-offer comes after the interview. Conditional offer comes after approval by the captain review board on Friday. PRIA/background checks can still be underway at the time of conditional offer. After the conditional offer, you do the drug test. So I don't know how someone went from the interview to drug test, unless he interviewed Friday and got a rush on the board?

You can send your PRIA work back prior to the interview or bring it with you.
