Default Commuting on Reserve

Is commuting right after training and on reserve feasible? Has anyone ever done it? and would shorter trips be better or longer trips in this scenario? Does company pay for hotels on commute or should i be needing a crash pad?

To paint a better picture, i am from MIA area and don’t See myself landing MIA right after training(expecting 6-9months to get home base). Plus due to reasons can’t leave MIA area. So commuting is the only option.

You will need a crash pad where ever you’re based and you’ll probably have to commute in the day before. The company does not pay for hotels in your base for commuting purposes.

I did this for my first month on reserve commuting from MSP to CMH for the first month off IOE and let me tell you it straight up sucks. I had better quality of life when I was a CFI. I am in the same boat as you where due to personal reasons I have to commute for a few months, I have a crash pad and it saved me a lot compared to staying in hotels.

Yes it is feasible and a lot of people do it. You won't be able to control the length of your trips while on reserve. You will have some control over how your reserve days are distributed over the month but with only 12 days off there is not much room to maneuver when you have low seniority.

On the plus side you will become an expert at commuting/jumpseating real quick and that will help you out through the rest of your career.

Just plan your commute to take into account that UAL pilots now have JS priority above Republic pilots on all UAX except your own metal. Plan accordingly. This is as it should it always should have been.

Actually they don’t. No priority over YX on SkyWest, Mesa and GoJet flights. It’s TOC like it’s always been and how it should have remained if UAL pilots won’t so butthurt because they couldn’t make it to the podium in time.

I smell a troll.

Commuting does, and will always, forever, suck. Robs you of your time off. It sucks more if you're based in LGA where you'll see your flight home leave the gates while you're waiting for yours so many times.
