Default The airline WILL sue for training costs

https://simpleflying.com/republic-airways-suing-flight-students/

Most likely the students should be able to buy out the contract after flying at their legacy carrier.

from ACN

Republic Update:

Republic Airways is Suing 12 Pilots, Seeking a Combined Total of $406,550.

perhaps. But right. Now they are facing current money due, and possibly the legal expenses for both themselves and Republic.

YX must have dozens? hundreds? of LIFT students in the same boat. If they don't sue these twelve, then there's nothing to keep the rest of the students from bailing for the first carrier to hire them.

payment plan if $100/month and they’re fine.

Naa. More likely they’ll want to hammer them to discourage the others.

And add interest

And court costs.

Meh. I think it’s more interesting that it never occurs to anyone to fulfill their obligations. And when you don’t there might be legal consequences.

When you make bedfellows with the regionals you get what you pay for.

If you have certain assets, they can attach those. They can also attach your paycheck if you have a job. By "they" I mean the courts, a lessor can only size collateral that was part of the original deal, such a lien on a house. That's why they sue them.

Normally it's not a cost-effective for an average citizen to sue someone and jump through hoops to collect on the judgement. But for a large company, trying to make a point it might be worthwhile.

From the sound of it, the deal was "we pay you and you come fly for us for X years"

There may or may not have been a clause to release these guys, but that is besides the point.

The idea that such a student is supposed to sit idly by for almost a year waiting for a job after being trained by Republic's flight school should likely get laughed out of court. Of course, the purpose for Republic is not to win but to financially ruin these individuals as a lesson to others.

Court cases are a line item for corporations, and an empty bank account for you. Just remember that when you think questions like "justice" or what is right is what this is about.

It is about control.

The French phrase is, Pour encourager les autres.

But if you don’t believe what I wrote, feel free to sign up on one of these “deals” and find out the hard way.

When You Can't Afford to Pay Attorneys' Fees

Sometimes the worst happens—you get involved in a lawsuit, lose, and end up responsible for the other side's attorneys' fees. Considering that the attorneys' fees for a litigated case that has made its way through a trial can run $100,000 to $500,000, finding out you've lost and have to pay your opponent's costs can add more than a little insult to injury.

So what do you do?

If you don't have the funds to pay, your attorney will likely recommend bankruptcy. Attorneys' fees are generally dischargeable, meaning you can wipe them out.

If your income is low, you will probably qualify for a quick Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Otherwise, you'll likely pay the fees off over five years in a Chapter 13 case. The amount you'll pay in Chapter 13 could be very little or the entire amount—it will all depend on your income, debt, and property value.
