Please expand on this thought. RPA is currently struggling to staff their current bases and flying so how is it that they "definitely (probably)" have enough staff to open an entirely new base? SKW has taken over enough DL flying in the northeast they are opening LGA back up (per an inside source). If RPA had the required staffing, that would not have happened. Also, current numbers are ~1,900 pilots, down from ~2,600 with numerous planes parked.

For the most past RPA bases are dictated by their mainline partners. For example Republic used to have a big Miami base with mostly AA flying. Then RPA got cute and tarted helping Delta expand their Miami presence. AA saw this and said ohh hell naw and took away most of RPAs flying in Miami. Republic was forced to close their Miami base shortly after.

The simple fact is bases come and go, we've closed three, DEN, IAH and MIA (did I miss one?) bases and opened one (BOS) in last several years. The statement that we've contracted to being a NE airline is pretty accurate though. I would not "bet on" any western bases for a couple reasons. Our seniority list is shrinking as opposed to expanding, (although we are back in hiring mode), it would take a lot of flying out of one location to support that location becoming a base. I don't think we have any airports west of Chicago that would foot that bill as of today.
No one would like to see it more than I. We used to do a lot of flying farther out west and it made for much more enjoyable pairings. Work your way out west then back to NE instead of the less interesting base-outstation-base-oustation RON ...and repeat two days. I just don't see it in the near future, but I won't pretend to know the management's thinking on it.
