Some USN planes had individual ejection systems, each crew had to pull his own handle to go. There were a few incidents where the NFO got really scared on approach, punched out and the pilot salvaged it, went around and landed. That would be a tough carpet dance. And an even tougher reception in the ready room.

There was also a A6 where the pilot after weeks of heavy weight tanker cat shots decided he had a cold cat shot with a nearly empty A6 and ejected. The NFO had no idea why the pilot left but successfully flew the jet for quite a while by reaching across for the stick. After much discussion it was decided to have the NFO fly by the ship and jump.

The story has been updated to include a USAF statement that two US active duty pilots were on board. The story has also been improved to call it an "incident," rather than a "crash," and to note that it was raining at the time of the incident.

And yeah, since they raised the Class A mishap limits, two ejection seats even at $300K each, won’t get you very close.

In a fighter, if you’re heading for the dirt after landing, you better believe they’re ejecting. Loss of nosewheel steering ability, loss of brakes, loss of control due to hydroplaning, whatever the reason, there’s no way I’m sticking around for Mr Toad’s wild ride once we leave the pavement.
Who knows what happened, but loss of directional control (even at somewhat low speeds) would definitely lead to stepping out of the jet.

Dunno.
I'd almost guess there had to have been some backstory, maybe all the BN's knew the pilot as "that guy". Or maybe the BN was the guy who flew every approach with both hands on the handle with tension applied... maybe he was getting out of the mil in two weeks.
