Regardless, the current regime pays absolutely no attention to these petitions. It does whatever it wants to do, no matter what.
I don't think they pay much attention to anything and it is my honest opinion that writing or calling your representative won't do diddly squat. We have got to clean house from the deepest basement to the highest branches if this country is ever going to return to it's proper path.

The gov will always threaten to cut things that will effect the most people. Why do you think they always mention schools, police, firefighters and parks. That way the uninformed will scream "I will pay more taxes". Enough already.
I found the best way to get elected officials to do the right thing. Scream at them at meetings. They work for you and treat them as your employee. They do a bad job. We are going to fire you.
Did you know that 85% of California school budget goes to salaries, benefits and retirement. Thats 15% for the kids who we all say are important. Enough !!!.

This is PRECISELY the goal of "sequestration" and the current regime that dreamed it up.

Look up the faa home page and see what their budget is, its unbelievable. 16 billion for fy 2012. The 672 million cut could be easily spread around. The tower closures are for political impact nothing more, and I agree that some could stand to be closed without any real impact.

The trust fund that pays for all of the FAA's operations has a cash balance of $10 billion.

Do people really think that putting these controllers on unemployment and eliminating air traffic services is really going to help the economy? How much is it going to cost in fuel when you're holding #2 for the approach and number 1 doesn't bother to cancel his IFR till he has the airplane buttoned up in the hangar?
It's not really a shared burden when one of us gets furloughed either. At least I have yet to hear of other pilots passing the hat to help out furloughees.

The solution to waiting for the other guy to cancel is to politely remind him after he reports clearing the runway.... at least that always worked for me.

The towers in question are contract, correct?

No impact to unionized government employees..

We are keeping CRG and VQQ in my area. SGJ got the axe though. I agree with a lot of the comments I've been reading about this... There are a lot of airports that could really be just fine without a tower. Airports like CRG which has 4 flight schools, 4 x 135 Charter companies, MedFlight services, Police Aviation, Banner Tow Operations, and 2 x FBOs (not to mentioned under the floor of a Charlie and wedged between 2 military Deltas) needed to keep our tower. I think the airports that needed to keep them, did. And those that did not, didn't.

Writing snail mail does. Many congressional offices count one legible, hand-written snail mail letter as the equivalent of 100 emails or 250 calls.
