Witnesses always seem to claim this with every accident. Happened with the Colgan accident as well.

I'd take that with a grain of salt. Another witness said the aircraft was "sputtering."

One would think, but appearances can be deceiving. Could have been a traumaric decelaration or lateral side to side like a group loop can do.

Even through the FedEx in Narita came to a rest on its back, the forward fuselage looks mostly intact. Meanwhile the Sioux City DC10 cockpit wasn't even indentifiable right away, simply a mass of metal and wires.

BTW for anybody that knows., the FedEx in Narita, I didn't see/read a report. Was the cause of death traumatic deceleration, smoke, or other? Just curious.

Looks like a NTSB Press Conference is about to start
Press Conference Summary: 26 Member NTSB Go Team on site. Believes that the aircraft clipped trees, passed over homes, appeared to impact as base of small hill, forward section came to rest 300 yards further at the crest of the hill. Remainder of fuselage some 70 yards past forward section. First responders still suppressing the tail with foam and expect to gain access to the Recorders shortly. NTSB already at SDF collecting maintenance and crew data.

John Carr and others:

Isn't it a bit too early to start "speculating" about this fatal accident ? Why not let the NTSB and UPS personnel at least sort out the basic facts before we start the parade of "well, judging from the position of the left MLG, I'd say....."

Prayers go out to the pilots families.

Y'all be careful out there.
