A good safety start to 2014 for GA

I do all those things. All good pilots do. Got tailwheel endorsement shortly after getting my cert. The BFR was ridiculously easy for me. He was about as thorough as a checkride. If you can't pass a PPL checkride within PTS, and you call yourself a pilot, you have BIG problems.
JFK had no business making that flight. Adding a bit of weather review every 2 years would probably not have changed his deeply flawed thought process.
My point is that legislation or regulations will almost always backfire and not significantly target the problem. A test correctible to 100% is simply a hoop. If the pilot does not know this stuff or care enough to learn it on his own, then tough luck for him and his passengers, and hopefully his incompetence is exposed with the BFR.
I detest the whole nanny-state mentality, especially in aviation, where most mistakes do not really affect other people as much (as compared to driving).

It's good that you keep your skills up like that, I wish everyone did, there wouldn't be nearly as many accidents.
Don't get me started on the whole driving thing...
I'll stroke out!
