Psych evaluations post-Germanwings crash
I know it is still early with regards to what happen with the accident in Europe but it is interesting hearing the talking heads wonder why pilots don't go through yearly psych evaluations. I don't know about you but I know a good many people who have not passed the delta or united test and they seem like pretty well adjusted people. Let's hope calm heads prevail.

I should email CNN about the hiring practices of a certain bottom feeder regional. They'd be able to get a week out of that saga.

If I remember correctly it was your beloved Skywest who had a pilot MURDER his GF run from the law then steal a SKYWEST plane and blow his brains out in the cockpit after attempting to fly it..... |
Remember when you told me I was going to get sued for talking out your favorite recruiter? ROTFLMAO.

Mesa. CNN is going crazy right now. Imagine if they knew about their hiring practices.
|
The hiring practices at most regionals are sketchy at best. Anyone with an ATP and a pulse automatically qualifies. I'm sure there's gonna be some grandstanding politicians all over CNN bloviating on the matter soon enough.
|
I hope they do.
|
...so what would you like to do for pilots currently working FaceBiter?
|
You mean the same CNN that barely covered this guys 600hrs sure
|
Don't forget the Colgan captain who had 4 TERA bytes of kiddy porn.
|
Why doesn't somebody cover CNN's hiring practices?..... Jeez.

You spend more time thinking about Mesa than JO does. Go outside. Or like. Idk. Come grab a bev with Prior and I in IAH. Either way, just stop thinking bout us so much. |
Ahhhh, the hilarity of regional pilots at their most pathetic best. Thanks for the laugh.

His inexperience is a WHOLE other situation all together. |
CNN- "No regulations exist on hiring standards and most pilots are hired at budget hotel conference rooms or old office buildings near airports, with little to no mental screening and no doctors present, we go now to student pilot and aviation expert for more, take it away"
|
"Let's put cameras in the cockpits" Anderson Cooper says.. Right, because a gopro in the flightdeck would have prevented this.
|
It's interesting, not even a month ago this forum was debating single pilot cockpits being the wave of the future.
Now we have this- "Lufthansa, together with other German airlines, has announced the immediate introduction of new rules for the cockpit. It will now be a requirement for there to be two authorized people in the cockpit at all times." My guess is the future will have to be no humans in the cockpit or at least two, but never one. |

Few professions are infected with such a wide range of personality disorders, neurosis, psychosis, paranoia, hysteria, extremism (political, social) and general oddness as airline pilots. If detailed psych exams ever become mandatory, I expect the pilot shortage to blossom. Not only will many present pilots be found "questionable" and therefore in jeopardy in what surely would be a poorly thought out vetting process like OSA, but it will keep many who would be found acceptable away as it's simply one more undesirable hassle to add to the already long list of why this profession isn't worth it. |

I think if its one, the "other pilot" could be on the ground via an uplink. Think about if a ground station could have taken "control" of the flight. Just something to ponder.

Or...the guy at the ground station goes off the rails and flies it in to the ground. Keep this incident and the true threats in perspective.

Just remember that the guy on the ground would be "managing" multiple flights, not just the one.

High speed trains with mag-levitation and vacuum tunnels is future of mass transit. About 100 years from now your children will be telling their grand kids all about how these weird tubes flew through the air.

The science is sound, but the infrastructure costs will be beyond colossal...far beyond the ability of few tech billionaire angel investors to fund. So it will take massive investor coalitions and/or government sponsorship. And then it would have to be protected from terrorists...a train traveling at high hypersonic velocity colliding with a cinderblock would release energy equivalent to about 40lbs of HE. Still have to stand in line at TSA. Probably more than 100 years. |

Pilot medical confidentiality
I am not a pilot, nor do I work for an airline, but I am trying to get reliable information from a reliable source on this issue.
What level of medical confidentiality would everyone here be comfortable with, particularly concerning psychological issues? From what I have heard, a pilot who took the prudent action of seeking psychological counsel when they have difficulty dealing with some issue in their life, could be facing serious and possibly permanent career problems. Is this something that creates a barrier to those who might otherwise benefit from such counsel? What are the present rules for airline pilots? Is it limited to general HIPPA confidentiality laws? If someone is diagnosed with something that might impinge on their ability to work by a private doctor, is there a law that would require the doctor to inform the company flight surgeon? If not, should there be? |
