Made a turn to line up with Tinker the first time I went to OKC. ATC caught it right away, not sure how much further I would have gotten before I figured it out. Night visual approach 4-5 miles vis. It was leg 4 of a long day and I was completely unfamiliar with the area. Was asked if I had the airport in sight. Yup, right there. Those lights looked so inviting. Learned that lesson early in my career and avoided the landing but this stuff happens. Confirmation bias is a b1tch.

Reminds me of when I first checked out in the right seat of the 727. We were going into CMH or maybe DAY, either way, I'd never been in there before, so when ATC clears us down to 3000, I got right on down. I'm scanning the horizon (daylight, but hazy) and I can't see an airport anywhere in the general direction.
I look over at the Captain and ask, "You ever seen this place before?".
He just smiles and says, "Not from this angle..."
We were about 30 miles out and about 2000' agl.

Thank God for magenta lines and green arcs!

Once you call the field, I suspect the approach controller may divert their attention to other things. Staffing may also be minimal (or trainees on duty?) when RCA is not conducting operations. Landing to the SE it may not be obvious to the controller since the DW brings you in close proximity to RCA. There are usually B1s parked outside on the ramp too.

A long time ago a new hire buddy was a S/O on a 727 that was supposed to land at TPA. His comment to the Captain ;" I didn't know they had F-4's at TPA" as they exited the runway at Macdil. Oops

I actually saw F4's at TPA, Israeli trainers gone bingo. Drag chutes every where.
