No, I totally understand the point you’re trying to make. I’m not shooting at you. I appreciate you helping the kid out, so kudos for the effort. It’s directed at HR and the marketing pinheads who have too much influence in our job description now. I agree with everything you wrote. Just trying to bring awareness to the fact that “safety in all things” seems to be taking a back seat to some pretty unimportant hiring criteria at this time in the industry. Maybe it’s the shortage, or new generation thinking, or both. But if you don’t see this change happening before our eyes, you haven’t been paying attention. It’s a trend vector that those of us who’ve been in this industry for a long time are not happy to see, because our focus isn’t on the “main thing”. Hence the recent FAA safety stand down.

Welcome to the RJ world! We started seeing this trend starting in 2016. As an LCA at the RJ level it was extremely common to see students with 50-100 hours of OE. Even had a few get their consolidation done while still on OE.

IMHO this was all caused by multiple triggers….age 65/stagnation, less teenage kids interested in aviation, cost of entry to fly, general aviation shrinking, poor pay at the regionals (return on investment) and many more.

Raising the retirement age will shrink the pool even more IMHO. What you are seeing is the new reality in aviation.

These same people can upgrade after just one year on property and be paired with extremely green new hires. I guess that’s why we did away with the short course for upgrades and just announced that all new captains have to go back to the sim after 6 months instead of the current 9 month cycle. I’d expect both new hire and upgrade OE times to significantly trend up. Times have definitely changed.

I hear you. My sim partner last August for my upgrade had 2500TT, no turbine PIC and had a great habit of tuning out when he was the PM. Many a talks were had by the PI’s.

As an RJ captain with a spotless check ride record, college degree, no blemishes, I can't get a call from United but they're hiring 2500 hour people who don't pay attention in sim training? What is going on in HR over there?

I was hired in 2019 and if it wasn’t for the CPP/Aviate program I was in the same boat. Until I entered the program I didn’t get a peep from UA.

Seems pulling regional pilots isn’t in the majors best interest, at least from what I’ve read

Who knows what the secret sauce is. I first applied in January, updated my application about once every two weeks and received the e-mail to take the assessment the first week of June. Have an interview in a couple of weeks.

1700 Turbine PIC

Interestingly enough, 0 jet time...but plenty of time in clapped out ATR-42s and 72s.

Keep updating, I'm sure you'll hear something soon enough.
