I think we view things very differently and that’s okay. It’s hard for me to see your point of view, and I do honesty feel like you are in the minority here.
I hope, for many reasons, that this passes and we can fight hard in the JBCA for better pay (with the aid of pattern bargaining) and true profit sharing.
Here’s the problem with JetBlue’s pattern bargaining. The pattern B6ALPA bargains for is to join the bottom of the pack, and get nothing that only one or two other carriers has (ie delta NEO rates). Last time around it was 321 override—only a couple had it. And 220-100 rates couldn’t be close to 220-300 rates like delta because the ghost rates at UA/AA were low, so B6 got in-between the group 1/2 split and the delta -100/-300 split, despite delta being the only ones who have either plane. But then on the 321 side not enough had an override or different rate, so we couldn’t get that. Small, but notable examples of how the company seems to get to pick and choose the most advantageous (low) rates/items and the union just goes along with it and cries to guys like me who say we want it “not industry standard” (except they don’t say the same when it comes to things like profit sharing, hmm). The only “pattern” B6ALPA consistently bargains with is never leading on anything and always bringing up the rear, ensuring that it’s always the other airlines doing the heavy lifting and setting the pattern for us to bargain to (at the back, of course).
So you hope this passes so you can fight hard in the JCBA for stuff you could easily fight for right now…why not fight now? Especially since there will be a LOT of things needed to be fought for. Why not do some heavy lifting now, so that it’s less of a haul over the next 3-5 years slugging it out with two dissimilar pilot groups who each have their own priorities. Spirit guys will make white shirts, karbon jackets, and DTZ their hill to die on, jetblue guys will make bottom of the peer set pay their hill, and 6-9 pilots will be screaming for profit sharing. They’ll get 50% of the desired items in the JCBA, call it a win, and say the next time will be where the leverage is.
There’s leverage now. It’s always next time. Make it now.
