I heard she has changed her mind? Not going to do it. I am flying that route next week in a DA-20, and there are days I am not going to fly if the weather gets too bad. Coming out of YIP, stopping CYZV, CYFB, BGSF, BIRK, EGPK, destination OTBD. Selling it to an A&P Mechanic school.

A page or two ago she said the proposition is now to use a C182 with TKS deice as a non-certified system, as there is no certification available for this system on the 182.

Avanti. It's nuts, don't do it. Any of a hundred things could happen that would present the system from doing its job. If you need a longer list of potential problems than the few items I listed, let me know and I will give them. Even if it were certified, you shouldn't launch into known ice with it.
Quote: please don't go over the n atlantic single engine in the winter, with anybody !!! even Lindbergh waited till May !!! Buon Natale girlfriend !

And even then he almost lost control with an Ice encounter, taking the wings off a c-172 takes just a few hours. UPS the damn thing
Quote: What does everyone think of my latest crazy idea?

What do I think of your idea? YOU called it crazy!

If things get bad, two hours supply of de/anti ice on a nine hour leg isn't that much.

And a two hour capacity for the deice in the "normal" setting. What is the capacity in the "Oh sh*t" setting?

Before you undertake this undertaking (pun intended), try reading Lindberg's book The Spirit of Saint Louis (We is another good read, but less focused on the flight). Or if you are in a hurry, watch the movie:even knowing the outcome, I peed my pants a little.

Speaking of Peeing, why not practice before the flight? Find a new acquaintance, open your pants, take a funnel and fill a cup. Don't mean to be rude: just pragmatic. (I always get performance anxiety when faced with "operation golden flow" ).

One thing that will help with number two is adjusting your diet. Prior to Iron Butt trips ( see IBA - World's Toughest Motorcycle Riders), I adjust my diet to reduce my refuse: lots of simple sugars for energy and broths for protein. No heavy stuff to plug me up or weigh me down.

If you still feel it necessary to do something crazy, why not just come fly with me? I can show you wondrous places like Victoria, TX. Or perhaps you would prefer the mystery of a border town: Del Rio! Wherever you choose, our time alone in the cockpit, handling the joystick, and penetrating storms would provide you memories to last the rest of your life.
Ok a few quick tips I will give you because I don’t want to waste my time on something that is obviously a really bad idea.

1. Don’t do it.

2. See a shrink because you obviously don’t care about your safety.

3. Out of all the people who have responded do you really think they are ALL wrong? If so please enroll in school since you obviously would need it.

4. Ferry flying is probably a really fun job but single pilot IFR, with ice, with 8 hours flight, with no autopilot is not. It really isn’t that fun with auto pilot and anti ice. Eventually you do get bored of the white.

5. Don’t do it.

Oh and as previously mentioned think of the people who will have to come get your frozen behind when you do need to bail. As a pilot are you really this reckless? Is this flaimebait? It just seems immature and irresponsible to do this.
Two things:

1) St Johns is way better than Goose. 150 pubs in downtown St Johns. Nuff said.

2) Exposure suit and raft not necessary. A north Atlantic ditching in the winter is not survivable.
My old legal writing professor used to say that a good sign a topic has been exhausted and there is no more to say is when many different people, independently, begin to say the same things.

To summarize:

She came
She asked
She got
She isn't going
She came back
She asked another question
She got the same answers

Thread closed. Thanks to everyone for caring.
