Hi everyone. I'm not going to sugarcoat this I pretty much need a straight forward answer here, so if you can please help me out with this that would really help me out. Well, to start off people make dumb decisions when they're young and ultimately regret their actions later on. I made the decision to shoplift and was convicted of that crime back when I was 17 and I'm turning 19 this November.

I got a lawyer to assist me with this, the prosecutor and my lawyer agreed on something where if I stay out of trouble for an entire year the conviction would be removed from my record. Well it turns out it's just hidden from public view, excluding government administrations. Is there a way I can remove it completely from my record in a few years? I heard there was a method of doing this but I'm not completely sure. So I'm pretty much asking will this ultimately kill my dreams of becoming a pilot should I just consider a different profession to follow or is there still some sort of hope left for be becoming what I've wanted my entire life?

Laws on complete expungement of criminal records varies from state to state, both in terms of what can be expunged, the procedure to do it, and the ultimate effect on what is reported and to whom. You need to speak with a lawyer in the state where the conviction occurred.

No, it won't kill your dreams. It may delay it some...however, just stay outta trouble. I'll just say, it ain't worth it!

As NoyGonnaDoIt suggested, check into the expungement laws of your state. If your able to get it expunged, after some time has passed, do an FBI check and a state police check on yourself...whichever state you live in.

It won't even delay your dream. They won't see if you were a juvenile. Don't listen to all the BS out on here where people say they will find out. Go run your own FBI check and I bet you a million it isn't on there(unless you were finger printed for the crime). I however would disclose it but sugarcoat it a bit. But the other poster is right every state has different laws recording juvenile records. Hire a company to do your own check first and go to the FBI.gov and pay the fee to run your then you decide.

Hell I know a guy with a recent DUI's that have got hired. Another buddy with a recent suspend license was also hired. mistakes when your a juvenile is a no factor. Just tell the interviewer it was your friend and you were along for the ride. But own up to it.

He was obviously arrested and by his own post was convicted:

I'm pretty sure that he would have been fingerprinted.

Doesn't mean that he was. There are variations on themes in the way things are handled in different states and even in different courts within the same state. I'd say that there are a large number of people who have gone through the criminal process once or twice for youthful indiscretions who really have no idea of the legal status they ended up with.

Every state is different I'll give you that - but I posed this question to the juvenille division and misdemeanor division here and they said that even juvenilles are fingerprinted when arrested. It is part of the legal process.
I'll play the odds here. I bet $1 he was finger printed if arrested - I'm a gambler like that :o)

I'M GOING TO SAY THIS ONE MORE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! (YELLING AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS)

AS LONG AS YOU WERE NOT CHARGED AS AN ADULT, THIS ARREST NEVER HAPPENED. LEGALLY YOU WERE NOT EVEN CHARGED WITH A CRIME. YOU WERE PETITIONED AS A MINOR.

MINOR ARREST/CONVICTIONS DO NOT ENTER INTO THE NCIC COMPUTER SYSTEM WHICH MAINTAINS ARRESTS/CONVICTION RECORDS FOR WHOMEVER TO SEE!!!!

AS A JUVENILE THE COURTS HAVE RULED THAT YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO PRIVACY THAT DOES NOT APPLY TO THOSE WHO HAVE REACHED MAJORITY (18 AND ABOVE).

SO WHEN ASKED IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN ARRESTED....YOUR ANSWER IS NO!!!!

Yes, I typed this in all caps because we have discussed this before, and I litterally started pulling my hair out when I started reading everyone's "expert" advice.
