Quote: Hats are only required for picketing and strikes. They make us look mean, ruthless, basically Sky Nazi-esque.

Otherwise, they have no place on the flight line. They only serve to enforce the traveling public's image that we are bus drivers. They are also reminiscent of a bygone era and make us look like we are trying to look outdated in modern times.

A buttoned blazer combined with a professional, clean-cut uniform is the airline pilot look of today. Even overseas, very few airlines still require a hat.
That's not true. Either you haven't flown much overseas or you're not paying attention.

Quote: I like tradition.

UT has Orange and white uniforms. I like that. Gangs don't like 'em so much because they aren't a modern black uniform shirt that translates so well there. But I like our tradition. It transcends generations.

But go on for that more modern look if you want over there at AA... or American Airways... or whatever your new airline will be called. And remember this discussion in 20 years when some punk new hire is ****ed because you have to actually wear socks or that his phone cannot be visible in uniform, or.... So good for you... Every tradition has to start somewhere.

or not.
Nah, not envious at all of youse guys, just a little good natured ribbing.

Side note, if I ever end up at Big D I'm gonna be one of those hat protesters. In fact I'll go on a Ditch The Hat campaign just like I did here at AA... and hey it worked!

Well let's see. Given that I fly JFK 767 Int'l, I can assure you I go overseas plenty. Paying attention? Last time in BCN I watched countless Iberia, Vueling, Click, etc crews getting in and out of the terminal elevators sans hats. Same with Alitalia crews in FCO... ditto the KLM crews who stayed in our hotel in BCN.

Same deal in Caracas, and a bunch of places in S America.

So I maintain that the hat is outdated and disappearing from most uniforms worldwide - for good reason. It does nothing for the uniform except makes it look too Nazi-ish.

It's 2012! These hats should have warm lamb's wool ear flaps that fold out on those cold days and a modern cop helmet chin strap for those windy walk arounds.

Also, why take them off while on the flight deck? I say if they made these well enough we could just wear them all day. A pen holder along the side would be great for those, "advise when ready to copy clearance" times.

You are now quoted as having said that. I am guessing that that wouldn't go over very well in an interview... just sayin'

None of us are nearly as anonymous as we might think, and I never said anything about envy. I couldn't care less whether you are or aren't, but the fact is that the hats are part of the uniform, and part of our brand. If that is offensive to you or anybody that works at DAL, then maybe there is another place where you might want to work. That is your choice. I won't be offended either way. Besides, it's just a hat. BFD.

You guys all seem to want to dress down more, I would rather we dress up more, I want the Momar Gadafi look! Straight up 3rd World Dictator!

A tall hat, big yellow feather sticking up, 5 hanging shoulder braids, air medals all over the front under my wings, knee high black boots, and a real riding crop, to smack the F/A's on the arse as I board, and a sharp salute from my F/O's...if they expect a landing.

Kinda like this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgTBZ...feature=relmfu

Sure, it might take me an hour to get dressed, but I'll bet you the azzholes at the TSA checkpoints will jump, when I say JUMP!

This is why it took me three minutes to read 2 posts and reply back. For a pilot, you aren't too sharp.
