Hats are only required for picketing and strikes. They make us look mean, ruthless, basically Sky Nazi-esque.

Otherwise, they have no place on the flight line. They only serve to enforce the traveling public's image that we are bus drivers. They are also reminiscent of a bygone era and make us look like we are trying to look outdated in modern times.

A buttoned blazer combined with a professional, clean-cut uniform is the airline pilot look of today. Even overseas, very few airlines still require a hat.

Interesting if true... Never heard this before.

But I do have to tell you, during an emergency I'd sooner stop in the lav than reach for my hat on my way out . Hell, I might even kick it a little closer to the fire.

Yay! A hat thread. We were overdue for a hat thread. I'm sure someone will make a definitive statement this time which will end the argument forever.

Without the hat, where would you put your keys, money, ID and unmentionables during your layovers?

Look, I'm all for professionalism. I have no problem with the pressed pants and starched shirt, clean tie and I have no problem wearing the jacket. I just feel the hat is a bit dated.

Before bashing CAL pilots; the hat is not optional from OCT 15 to APR 15. It is required while wearing the jacket which is required as of OCT 15. It is also required all year long for international flights. I'm not sure what the new "merged" policy will be. My guess is the new United will wear hats. Why? They are buying 12,000 of them. That's almost one million dollars for an "option". FYI: I'm not a fan of the hat either.

When you signed up for this job, what did you think you were going wear?

Kinda what I was thinking. If you don't like the hat, refuse to wear it, then please do not apply to Delta. You will be required to wear one. Nothing more irritating that having to listen to someone pontificate about having to wear the hat, even though they knew the uniform requirements before accepting the job.

The only thing good that happened in 9 years at my regional is that we no longer get in trouble for not wearing our hats.

Just because you agreed to the uniform standards during the interview doesn't mean you can't complain and do everything in your power to get it changed later on if it looks ridiculous. Which the hat definitely does.

Hey, there are a lot of things every one of us agreed to during the interview to get the job, that we absolutely don't agree with today. You really think I told the AA interviewers I'd be very involved with SPC activities?

Delta pilots, y'all are starting to look like Eastern European dinosaurs with the Aeroflotski hats... time to get with the times. Look around the world, most airlines have ditched the hat for a much more modern look.
