I agree Opec is a major problem. They have been controlling world oil supply since the 1970's. Their power has been erroding latley though, due to the #2 country on that list. Canada supplys more oil to the united states then any other single country. With over 80% of canadian oil reservers located in America friendly Alberta, so it bypasses the canadian federal government. The way it goes is Alberta sells as much oil as the US will buy, then sells the rest in province, any remaining gets sent out to the easterners. Alberta has made it clear that the US will get as much oil as it wants.
So I cant lie, i havnt done to bad by big oil. Alberta has more money then they kno what to do with, so they mail us all $400 a year. To give an idea of how much money is generated in oil, Alberta collects over $10 billion a year in oil Royalties!!!!!

It does take alot of investment by these oil companies to get the oil however. It is estimated at $50-100 billion worth of projects are required to extract oil from the oil sands in Alberta.

There you go, eh. A perfect example of industry stepping up to the plate and providing the needed technology and skill without the help of a Central Planning Committee staffed by members of the Politburo.
And it pays too!
Gosh, that's almost exactly the amount someone suggested we should be taxed.

The fact that these absurd profits are at a company which makes its money selling a substance that when burned has the effect of creating global climate change is problematic to me. I understand that it is not the company's fault (far from it in fact) that burning oil causes pollution, but any company with such insanely large profit margins should do something for the betterment of mankind.

It makes sense to me that a percentage of such outrageous profits made by oil companies should be invested in renewable energy and technology that reduces carbon emissions in addition to other initiatives that would reduce man's footprint on the earth. Furthermore it would wean the US off of foreign oil, while simultaneously addressing the problem of global warming. I would argue that any taxes charged to oil companies because they have such insane profit margins should be used to reduce carbon emissions and make the United States more environmentally friendly in general. In this case a tax makes more sense because oil companies tend to not have an incentive to invest in renewable resources (although it would make sense to get a market in the renewable energy market since over time it is bound to eat into the oil companies' market share - why not pick the market up yourself, if you're going to lose another one).

Perhaps airlines could even get into the game and do more to reduce emissions (even though I'd argue airplane's emissions are small, and why not reduce the very dirty industries first), like Virgin Atlantic has when it looked into tugging airplanes to the runway and starting engines there.

Oh yes, 11% is insanely large.

And Virgin Atlantic is just the thing to help you find a really good job in the Airline industry.

Sounds like you've been reading Al Bores book.

I agree that Virgin isn't a model of the best airline, but I just offered that as a suggestion because it seemed like a progressive, forward-thinking initiative (the concept of which was not just to reduce emissions but also reduce operating costs - less jet fuel burned=less money spent).

Say what you will about Al Gore, but at least he uses science to back up his argument, which is more than can be said for the "global warming is a hoax" nuts.

HOUSE HEARING ON 'WARMING OF THE PLANET' CANCELED AFTER SNOW/ICE STORM
HEARING NOTICE
Tue Feb 13 2007 19:31:25 ET

The Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 Rayburn House Office Building has been postponed due to inclement weather. The hearing is entitled “Climate Change: Are Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Human Activities Contributing to a Warming of the Planet?”

SAVE IT FOR A SUNNY DAY: Maryville Univ. in St. Louis area cancelling screening of Al Gore's 'Inconvienent Truth' because of a snowstorm...

Should have scheduled these for July. I know, I Know, record snow storms are a sign that global warming results in violent extremes yada, yada, yada.

I thought I smelled Al Bore on you. There are many types of science. Objective independent, funded, and funded with the objective of furthering a specific agenda.
Right after he invented the internet and lost the election, Al's contributions to Global warming stepped up mightily in an effort to get his rotund self back into the public eye. Some of you fell for it.

FDXLAG and jungle, you guys are idiot's.

First, global warming heats the ocean. If you watched Al Gore's movie, you would know that ice REFLECTS 90% of sunrays, while water ABSORBS 90% of sunrays. So as the earth gets warmer, the polar ice caps melt. Then you get exponential heating. Warmer oceans means more violent storms! Look up what a hurricane is incase you do not know.

I CHALLENGE both of you, FDXLAG and jungle, and anyone else who has not see the movie:
An Inconvenient Truth
to see it. I CHALLENGE anyone who has not seen it to take 90 minutes out of their lives and listen to some scientific facts. You will be a little more educated by the end.

What are you talking about I believe. When those scientist say that the earth has not warmed up at all since 99 I said see the movie. When they point out the the eastern part of antartica is cooling I said see the movie. When they point out the earth has heated up and cooled down thousands of times in the last couple million years I said see the movie. I'm with you. When my wife said lets get a heater for the pool I said see the movie. Of course when she said why do you need such a big truck I said what global warming.

Nice, call us both idiots because we have seen plenty of facts to counter the Bore version of the truth. It is a complicated subject that can't be covered in 90 minutes like some cute TV sitcom. There is a clear disagreement in the scientific community on the causes and effects. I don't know the answer, you don't, scientists don't and Al Bore doesn't care as long as he gets camera time.
I am not going to call you an idiot, and it isn't my job to educate you with 90 minute films.
