With the new ATP/CTP rules in effect, as i look at some of the programs out there, that offer required pre-reqs (30 hrs of ground training, sim requirement etc)-- some easy questions

1. You are are now required to have all the pre-reqs completed prior to taking the written?

2. After all those pre-reqs and taking the written, you are still required to take the ATP check ride?-- meaning the check ride has not changed ,... just the pre-reqs?
Example-- Sporty's offers the ATP/CTP course for $5k, but that only looks like the pre-reqs/sim and written but no check ride...

2. Yes. The ATP-CTP course is strictly for preparation to take the ATP Knowledge Exam (written). ATP Flight Training is normally separate expense.

It is possible that the ATP-CTP can be combined with a Part 121 air carrier's new hire training program (includes ground, flight and type rating ride). A few Regional airlines may have been approved for the ATP-CTP course. Check with the airline of interest if that is the direction you intend to go.

If your going on your on dime to the ATP-CTP keep this in mind. The course allows you to take the written, it doesn't prepare you to take it.

Glad I don't have to do the new program, but I'm curious? After you spend $5-8k for the CTP, do you have to take the written within a certain time period. And after you take the written, does it expire in two years like the old program? Would you have to re-do the CTP if the written expires?

The ATP-CTP is good for 5 years. After you take the written it is good for 2 years. My understanding is if you fail the written you have to do the CTP again, which is unbelievable. The CTP has nothing do with the written at all.

I'd modify this a bit - the CTP course is a pre-requisite for the ATP knowledge exam but I wouldn't call it preparation exactly. I found the 30 hours of coursework to be academically interesting but not really relevant to the actual written test. The sim time was moderately fun.

The ATP CTP graduation certificate is a requirement to take the ATM written per 61.35 (2). So yes, you have to complete the course before you take the written.

The ATP CTP has nothing to do with the written or checkride. The sims you do for the CTP will not relate to your checkride unless you happen to be taking the checkride in the same type aircraft the CTP used. So yes, you still have to take
an ATP checkride.

The ATM written test is valid for 60 months per 61.39 (a)(1)(ii).

If you fail the written test you must meet the requirements of 61.49. In addition AC 61-138 says the instructor who signs you off for the retest must be an ATP CTP instructor. No where do the regs require you to redo the ATP CTP.

Now that regionals are providing new hires who need ATP with the ATP CTP course, do you get your ATP check ride on the airline SIM while on training or you have to pay for your own check ride? how does it work?

Southwest dropped the 737 type rating requirement a few years ago. I don't know of any US airline that requires you to fund your own checkride.

The APT-CTP is good forever, the written results are only good for 60 Months (5 Years). If you fail the written you have to go back to a cup provider for retraining, like you would for any failed FAA test. the restraining would be going over what you missed on the test, not the whole course. finally the ATP-CTP is a check box item, it is required to take the test, but in no way does it actually prepare you to take the test.
