So a little update.
CFI checkride is scheduled for next week. Will probably do CFII right after. So I do plan on teaching, not sure if I want to go to a local school with a few students, or teach in my own plane or a rental as an independent cfi.
I still think splitting time in my plane doing long cross countries is going to be the way to gain the most hours quickly per day.
I talked to recruiting at NGPA. They said get started with the pilot pathway program now and start asking about taking the next step when I am about 4 months away from being qualified.

It's great being your own employer. It's great being able to charge time for your plane *and* deduct it as a business expense. It's great charging a reasonable rate and receiving that full rate, rather than receiving one-third of what the flight school charges for your services.
Unless you already have a source for students, though, finding students can be hard. Advertising doesn't have to be expensive, but you'll need to put some time into it if you take the cheap route.
You're also going to have to convince someone that you, as a brand new CFI with no flight school oversight, are going to teach them well. That will be the hardest part of all.

I've done both flight school and independent. There are plusses and minuses on the independent side.

I am still friends today with people I instructed with a decade ago. Several are at other airlines and we still talk regularly. It can be your hardest working, lowest paid, best job ever, a time that you will look fondly on for the rest of your life.

Back to the question of signing vs start date....
Looked like a couple of people had 5-6 months between CJO and class date, but it seemed unclear if that was by choice or if that reflected class availability. Anyone know for sure?

I was hired on Jan 26 and put into the first available CRJ class of May 28. ERJ was later but not sure how long - CRJ works better for me given bases available. About a week later they called to see if I could go into a May 10 class. I already have my ATP and was told to not be surprised to get called for an even sooner class.
So, got the call - was asked today if I could make it into the March 10 ERJ class. Guess they had an opening and I’ll now be starting about 2 months earlier!

you can count 25 hours towards your R-ATP TT/ ME mins for the time that you get during the sims portion. other than that... no you can't start early.
