Once you eliminate the money part, I guess the differences between mainline and regional flying come down to personal preference. Do you prefer fewer, longer legs to big cities or more, shorter legs to smaller cities where you're allowed to have dinner with your crew? No right answer. It just depends on the person.

Eh. Do you want to depend on other airlines' regional plans for the rest of your life, or do you want to go someplace that is fully in charge of its own destiny?

You could make $100K as a regional captain, or you could make $100K as a junior FO at a major. Once you're at that major, you can remain an FO on a junior fleet and build up your relative seniority quickly. It's a more secure route.

Wouldn't use the word secure in any reference regarding the airline industry.

Or you could make 180-200K a a regional captain... and who knows what the Majors will may when they start hiring..With the possibility of reduced line values ect. Could take 5+ years to get back to making your Regional captain pay. And another 5 years to dig out of the hole from the first 5 years..

for under 40. I would totally do it. Over 50 not likely...

Making 200k as an RJ CA isn’t the norm.

Yep, Sim instructors only seem to make that much as they are not restricted by Part 117 rules and can rack up the OT when times are good.

Anyone at XJT will disagree.

Doubtful, someone in their 40s will still have 20ish years left. A 2nd year FO at an LCC still makes more than a 10+ year CA (not to mention much better retirement).

This is one of the most brutal threads on APC right now. Where’s my popcorn!
