Considering SkyWest
First post on the forum... Long but it'll help with understanding my questions I hope.
I'll be retiring from the Army soon, date not set but likely around Feb 2020. I'm thinking about SkyWest post retirement. Being a dumbass (and busy playing in the sandbox too) I didn't get my ATP prior to the changes. I have around 5300 airplane hours / 4,800 ME turbine and another 4000ish helicopter. I've considered ponying up for the CTP/ATP and applying to Alaska as well, even though the pay difference is huge, several factors sway me to SkyWest:
About all I've heard for years from SkyWest folks is good, seems like a nice company to work for, and QOL is important.
I flew out of Fresno for years and have a home in the foothills about 35 minutes from the airport. FAT looks very junior and I'm sure I could manage to get a lot of work done on the home around my SkyWest schedule, even early on. I plan to sell the home eventually and move out of CA, but there's a lot of work to be done first. Idaho is top of my list and I have two sisters in the Boise area.
So, since the CRJ is at FAT and the ERJ at Boise, I would expect that to be an issue. Boise looks pretty senior too.
If were able to get on with SkyWest in the CRJ and eventually want to base out of BOI, what kind of issues would I be looking at? I assume a training lock of some kind in the CRJ would be the significant point. I'll have a retirement check to supplement my income, so if it's comfy and I'm having fun I'd likely stick around long term and the upgrade time looks long at BOI.
So how long are you locked to an airframe after training? Any experience with the FAT and BOI bases? What am I missing? Any input is appreciated.

FAT is Jr, (like NH or 1-2 months) and BOI is also( about 2-3 months) . Sounds like you have a good plan going, QOL is mey in this business, unless your 21 and not chains attracted. Then go to a true flow airline... I would do it. FAT for a few years while you fix up and sell. Then BOI... i think its 1 year unless you “request” a airframe then its 2.
After thinking for :30. If you plan to move to BOI in 1 year or under. I would just go ERJ and do SFO/SAN tell you move to BOI..

Some recent new hires should comment on that but the 1 year thing is a marketing fantasy.
Plan on a 2 year seat lock.
Also plan on transitioning into ORD / LGA and the transferring to BOI.
Get the scope when you are here - but basically it is “this is the way we have always done it” MO of not allowing people transitioning in certain bases for operational needs - in other words: plan on transitioning into a base with an operation need. And the transfer bases once you have been awarded ER7 transition class.

A very sincere thank you for your service!
You have very competitive times, for Alaska! SW will take you in an instant but if you can go right into AS, do it!
QOL is poor at best and nothing short of terrible for new hire reserves.
Worst case would be to come to SW for 6 months and then push hard for AS after you get your ATP and some airline experience.
Good Luck!

Food for thought. No one has a crystal ball unfortunately.

I tread carefully with throwing this out there, but *IF* these DEN growth rumors come true within the next year or so then I could see BOI becoming more junior. Not to mention the west coast DL growth rumors we've had forced down our throats for the last few years as well.

The easterly expansion does not account for all of our growth.
The Denver rumor has been around for a minute and the DVR already points to it being true.
Tread more carefully.

They only let two CAs in Denver last bid on the ERJ.

Thanks for the informative replies gents. I do appreciate the info and the sanity check on my thoughts. Prior to a year or so ago, if asked I would have told you I wasn't interested in flying for an airline after the Army. I've obviously changed my opinion on that subject, but feel uninformed/unprepared to a degree.
Thinking I'll go to one of the recruiting events in a couple of months and try to get better feel for the company and what my options will be.
