Default CRJ vs ERJ? (COS/DEN/SLC/DFW)

Long term (2+ years) OO aspirations including some combo of COS/DEN/SLC/DFW bases (COS/DEN for the long haul in all likelihood). No Shiny Jet Syndrome here and was thinking CRJ due to desired bases. Saw a couple folks refer to the CRJ as a ‘dying fleet’ recently, but that seems tough to believe given current OO fleet makeup, UA’s scope clause, etc. 2+ years is long enough for gravity to potentially no longer exist before it’s my time, but - given my base preferences - I’m curious about the likely intermediate-to-long term future of the OO CRJ fleet and opportunities for folks assigned to the CRJ fleet. Thoughts?

What does OO have, like 400+\- CRJs? Hard to imagine not requiring thousands of CRJ pilots for years to come....but as someone will point out (not incorrectly), “it’s the regionals.” Crazy business...

Second that^ CRJ’s are here for a long time to come. we still are taking New 900’s. (Yes replacing some older 200’s/700’s) but 60 NH’s alone in the CRJ every 2 weeks with no end in sight.. that being said. DEN ERJ is UA.. we don’t have anymore UA 175’s coming at the moment.. so i would go CRJ... Denver is supposed to be are largest Hub by summer....

Thanks a lot. Was hoping that was the consensus response I’d get and will be watching it all closely going forward.

Default Similar Question…

Hey everyone, couldn’t see a recent CRJ vs ERJ thread (I guess because it might be a stupid question) but I thought as SkyWest experts you would be the best to ask.

Ignoring basing options, is there any reason people choose the ERJ or CRJ? I’m hoping to join you guys at the end of the year, submitting my app this week.

Bases used to be the main reason people would choose one over the other. Now, the training delays on the CRJ side have been very long(2-4 months), for almost the past year. Which has not been the case on the ERJ side. Some people see the delays as a paid vacation so they do not mind. I recently completed training and the longest I waited was 3 weeks between PT and MT, only 12 days for IOE. Also, ive heard the CRJ side frequently gets 5+ legs days where as on the ERJ side we still get 5 leg days but not as often, yet to see anything over 5 legs in a day.

Basing is the main reason, avoid commuting if you can.

Other than that if you poke around a bit you can see some ERJ/CRJ convos in the forum. CRJ is more manual to fly, ERJ is more automated. ERJ tends to do slightly longer legs. If you aspirations to fly into Aspen or Eagle, CRJ is the only choice.

ERJ no questions asked. Way better airplane. CRJ pilots will tell you the ERJ isn’t a real airplane and that it takes less skill to fly. Maybe it’s true, maybe it isn’t. But who really cares. I would never pick one airplane over another based on which one “makes me more of a pilot.” Choose the airplane that is more comfortable, has better flying, and that the passengers love.

The ERJ does Eagle too. It has a DMA Bid just like the CRJ does
