Default DEC

Seriously considering coming back as a DEC at SkyWest, left there 10 years a go, currently flying corporate overseas for significantly less money…

Couple of questions please!

How long on reserve in ORD in the CRJ?
Is there anywhere more junior?

Thanks a lot

Rob

My buddy just did that, he got MSP initially but has been working his way back west on the bids. Not sure where he'll be when by the time he finishes training.

I'd recommend coming back on the last plane you flew (assuming it wasn't the Bro).

The seniority map on the SkyWest Careers page will tell you the hire date of the most junior captain and FO in each base. Your time on reserve will depend on how many FOs senior to you upgrade in your base, how many DECs are hired after you, and how fast the captains senior to you leave for greener pastures; too many variables to guess but it could be years.

Since FOs are being forced to upgrade, can one just pick a base to be the most junior Captain, or are DECs being offered just certain bases and if they don't like it, they don't take the job?

How much time does one have from call to report while on reserve?

Well I'm just assuming here but back pre 2020 there was a dude in my new hire who got awarded upgrade in ground school. Half way through procedure training they found out and made him switch. Not sure what ever happened to him but I know he didn't get through sims like the rest of us, and I only beat the Rona by 6 days before they shut down Training.

I'd assume when they do the logbook review, they'll make you submit a CA bid and then have to do all the captain flows and such.

There's AM, PM. And long call reserve. Long call gets minimum of 12 hours with I think 5 days a month where they can switch you to short call. Which is a 2 hour call out.

Life on reserve at Skywest can be HARD. One of the things that they really should have fixed if they wanted to deal with the attrition problem. A DEC will be on reserve awhile. I've known people who left the industry altogether (one went into insurance) after being abused for several years. A few more who stayed went from being cheerleaders to really angry. My advice is to take the most junior base and stay there until you can hold a line somewhere that you really want to go. DTW is best. ORD isn't too bad to gain seniority. I'd rather commute to a line than sit reserve in base (at Skywest). Dont crucify me for blasphemy...
