Commuting from TYS
Howdy all,
Have an interview coming up in a couple weeks. Anyone have any insights into commuting from TYS (Knoxville, TN)? Offline commute obviously. There are lots of flights to several SWA cities but all of them go to the wrong airport! I was thinking flying to IAD or DCA and working my way up to BWI from there would be the least painful. I have family near IAD so I have a place to crash if necessary.
I've never had to commute before (NetJets guy), so I'm a total newbie.
ATL would be the ultimate goal but I know that is uber senior.
BNA is an additional 2 hr 45 mins drive time for me from TYS. The thought of doing that regularly is not pleasant.
Thanks in advance!

As someone who didn't commute very long, and now drives to work, just reading that was painful.
If you get hired (good luck, BTW) you should consider moving closer to a base. Seriously consider.
Yes, I know this pretty unhelpful, but it doesn't make it less true.

Your situation sounds similar to mine (including family in BWI).
I think I would choose MDW base though.
TYS to ORD then the train to MDW.
Passrider.com reveals 6 flights on UAL and AA TYS-ORD. They're all CRJs but 6 flights and you could use CHA as a backup (closer than BNA). There 3 flights TYS-DCA and 2 TYS-IAD.
BWI is a valid choice, but MDW has more options.

That's a tough one.. Have you considered DAL? It's pretty simple to get from DFW to DAL via the DART. Then again, I don't know what the flight situation between TYS and DFW is.

Trust me, writing it was painful too! Thanks!

For me, the goal would be to move my trips around to get two 3 day trips back to back so I only have to commute once. At least once I get a line that is. I don't know how easy that would be as a junior guy though.

TYS-ORD seems that it would provide the best flexibility. Good mix of flights early morning to late.

Thanks! I have family that lives fairly close to IAD. I was thinking I could keep a car there and use it to drive to BWI. Taking the train ORD to MDW seems like a good option. Cheap too. No need to keep a car.

I do 6 day back to backs to accommodate my much easier (long drive) commute.
I do it by bidding weekday lines with 4, 3 day trips in the month, and then trade 2 of them for weekend or partial weekends. It is fairly easy to trade weekday trips for weekends. Vice versa is possible, but much less of a sure thing.
It will be more difficult as a junior guy, as there aren't that many 12 day lines to begin with, and you're not gonna get weekdays, or even partial weekends, for a while.

FedEx can get you almost anywhere overnight. 1 leg to Memphis in the evening, sit for a few hours in our lounge, and arrive at your destination at the crack of dawn.
Doesn't work for everyone, but it's something to consider.

Thanks TonyC! I didn't even think about the FedEx route. Maybe I should just hold out for FedEx. Easier commute!
