Base additions/removals?

I just looked at today’s schedule and they both have the exact same, 117 flights each. SAN is maxed out due to gate availability but STL can still expand with plenty of gate space available/unused. I have heard for a couple of years now that they want to take some of the connecting traffic out of MDW and funnel it through STL to reduce the congestion in MDW. Not saying STL will grow to be anywhere near the size that MDW is or that it will be the next base but there is potential there.

I would like to see the source on that. Not saying it isn’t possible. It just sounds far fetched. SAN is gate and runway constrained and is located in the corner pocket of CONUS. It has a lot of cool things like a rabidly loyal customer base of OE traffic and great weather, but it sucks for connections because our gates are currently divided between three separate security screens. It will never be a traditional base.
STL has more gates, more runways, and a huge growth potential. All that and it is located in a prime spot for connections (we don’t do hub and spoke, though).
I don’t think we will see a new crew base open up for years, if ever.

Wow. That’s amazing for SAN to pack that much into that old freaking airport. Good on them.
I think that is the deal with STL. They are probably in a bit of a seasonal lull right now since we aren’t flying a summer schedule. Once summer heats up, they take a lot of the pressure off MDW. My commuter city lost one Midway flight and gained a STL a couple of years ago.

Check out the Network Planning page on SWALife. You can pull up detailed flight schedules by station and route. SAN & STL run neck and neck through October, but most days SAN edges out STL by a handful of flights. Also, if you’ve been through SAN after 8pm lately, you’ll see the cluster F that is going on there with too many flights and not enough gates. Been pretty embarrassing there lately.
Ah yeah. The battle for hearts and minds in California. Get them there 10 early and get to the gate 30 late.

I think in the next 5 yrs you will see multiple satellite bases. As mentioned, the day/time of brick and mortar bases is passed. There is really no reason to ever go to the crew base. The only reason I go down is to check my mailbox, which is pretty useless.
Zero reason. I email or call if I need to speak to a chief, and that is seldom. They could be in DAL for that matter.
MCI, STL, SAN, AUS, SAN, TPA, SMF, SAT could all be virtual bases. We don’t use reserves traditionally anyway, so not an issue there.

Not yet, at least that's what I remember from looking at the vacancy award. It all depends on how many vacancies they create each month, and that's an unknown. They'll post next one in several days. The last one had very few LAX vacancies, they are growing it slower than I would expect. I guess it's due to the MAX grounding, but I may be wrong. There'll be growth in LAX down the road, but who knows when. Either way you'll get it, you may have to spend 1-3 months in OAK first. That has been a case generally with all bases with exception of ATL and DEN. It currently will take over a year to get either.

No, these are not permanent. That's a temporary placement after new hire training ends and their first vacancy bid. They will be out next month (probably OAK). The most junior person was hired in August 2018 and just got awarded DEN for July after being displaced in the spring. The only reason that FO got in is because we have a right of return clause in the contract (basically out of seniority return after displacement if several provisions are met). The reason I know is because I'm trying in vain for months to get DEN (more than 2 years on the property). Check the vacancy awards if you don't believe...
