Most "GK bashing" I hear in the cockpit recognizes his accounting and financial management chops, but disagrees vehemently with his employee relationship habits. Comparing pilots to plumbers is merely the most famous, followed closely by his statement to SWAPA that regardless of past goodwill gifts by the pilot group for the company's welfare, ALL contract negotiations are "just business".

That kind of employee relations nightmare can't possibly result in anything but grudging compliance even when everyone is pulling towards the same goal, and it builds a massive trust deficit. Great, everyone knows he can count pennies like a boss, but nobody trusts him with their JOB. Because, hey plumbers how about taking one for the team again har har har. That sucks.

That's also why even the guys right in the target demographic for VSP and who really do want to take the offer, are searching frantically for the loophole that will eff them over. Trust deficit, and it goes deep.

That's good because it looks they gave the group WAY too much time to decide on VSP. They've circled the wagons and are trying their best to talk each other out of it over on the SWAPA forums. Poor Dean.

Good, hopefully that means EXTO will trickle down to my seniority then...

They actually are. Smaller in almost all categories. Definitely in the people department. It's just everybody else in going to be way smaller.

It's all about perspective. Herb wasn't some kind of perfect relations guys. Herb would screw you, have a cigarette, drink and then laugh about it with you it has if you got the better deal. GK is not like that in anyway shape or form. Much more of a straight guy with honest answers that sometimes employees don't like to hear. I personally don't like the friend or foe in negotiations. Sick the bad apples to extract concessions and then play savior when it starts to hurt morale. As if it was bad management went rogue. Thats his style or what he is comfortable with. A lot of senior guys have only worked here. So they only have Herb to compare. Their is a long list of bad CEO's that have had nasty labor relations. Too many to list.

This is my third airline. Relations are FAR better than any place I ever worked in this industry by a wide margin. SWA's 2nd quarter loss will be it's largest ever in it's history. At least a couple of billion. Ugly to say the least. Yet he will spend probably a couple billion to thin the herd to right size the airline with no furloughs(I hope).

I don't have a problem with honest answers. I do have a problem with a boss that blows smoke my way. Grievances, length of contract negotiations and the response to us believing some goodwill would come from the side-letters. All those things aren't forgotten.

I am impressed by the response to this crisis (chaotic start and all) and that won't be forgotten either. As people are considering the VSP and exto, understand why they are looking the gift horse in the mouth.

The feller I'm flying this trip with is late 50's and taking it. And we had a non rev CA yesterday tell us that he's early 60's and taking it. Also, 502,000 pax through TSA yesterday. Good signs!!
